Black in America

I just want him to understand. It's really important.

I have always been treated badly because I'm different. So I champion the different. I feel for them, want to help in any way I can.

Evidently, I am stupid for wanting to do so.

Evidently, I am just stupid.

Ummm...then don't. No one invited you or anyone else to turn this into an impassioned, defensive plea for some cause. Get off your soapbox already.

Okay.

I'll be leaving for a little while. A month, maybe. How ever long it takes me to get well. A few months. I don't want to subject you guys to me anymore.
That's not fair.

I'm not leaving in a huff, or even really leaving. But I can't do any better than this because of where my jead is now.

So, I'm leaving till I get better. I hope I get better.

I'll see you all sometime. I'll miss you.

Slingblade,

I wasn't asking you to leave the forum, nor would I. That's not my intent or my place. I just think your participation in this thread has done more harm than good for you and for the thread itself.

I hope your upset feelings subside and that you feel better very quickly. I know that you have little control over your feelings and mood, but you can control your activities that are voluntary, like reading and posting in a forum thread that makes you upset. Please, for your sake, don't continue to follow this thread, at least not for the moment. It's not good for you.

Please, when you feel like it, continue to post elsewhere on the forum.

Now, please, anyone else, return to the topic at hand. Oh, and for the record, I welcome any discussion on the apparent relative paucity of black persons on the JREF forum, at TAM, or in skeptic circles, as it probably needs to be addressed. Any theories about why that may be so?

While I was googling around yesterday I came across some interesting stuff...I don't remember the websites I visited and I don't feel like searching right now so bear with me, AS

Black and Hispanic parents are more likely than white parents in the USA to stress the value of science education in grade school and high school but only 3% of PhDs in science and engineering are awarded to blacks. Some theories suggest they are intimidated to enter a field that is so dominated by white people in this country.

Obviously this forum is dominated by white males. Perhaps we could also look to the reasons why there are proportionally so few females here as well and maybe find a link to why there are so few black people.

I'm stupid. I don't know.

I don't think you are stupid, but, if you don't know, don't claim such nonsense.

The concept of ignoring skin color, but not doing anything else to correct inequities, won't make the inequities suddenly change. That's the best I can do to explain.

You, being white, find or locate racism in color-consciousness. You think ignoring or disregarding color consciousness is an absence of racism.

No, I don't. I just choose not to participate in racist thinking. As for not doing anything else to correct inequities, how do you know what I am doing, and not doing? If that isn't exhibiting prejudicial behavior, I don't know what is.

I have made it blatantly clear that I do not participate in any activity that can even remotely be considered racist. If you want to sow doubt about that, you have to show explicitly where I do that.

It matters to them! It's the reason they get treated differently. It matters to them. To deny that it matters is denying current reality. Can't you see that? That makes no sense to you whatsoever?

Where am I failing here? How can you possibly think that I deny that racism exist? Whatever gave you the idea that I would?

Again - and I really can't make it more clear: I do not deny the existence of racism. But I refuse to participate in any racist behavior.

I've quoted many documents, and did so in the post you quoted. Did you ignore them?

No, I didn't. But I am asking you why you make it so crucial to read this particular document, in order to be able to participate in a discussion about "race" - whatever that means.

It smacks of referring to a form of Holy Scripture. I'm a skeptic, through and through, so naturally, I react to such a demand.

I've tried until I've cried. My own words are inadequate compared to the sources I got them from. I can't understand why you want to hear my opinion rather than my sources. I thought sources were important. Why are you trying so hard to confuse and frustrate me? You aren't answering any of my questions, how is that fair?

Yes, sources are important. But you don't strike me as someone unable to form a coherent sentence. You are obviously drawn into this issue, and you seem to have read a lot. Why don't you just present your own argument?

If it takes time, take that time. I'm in no hurry, I can wait. Just don't shove me in the direction of a document you feel tells it all. I get very suspicious when people do that.

This is so cruel. It really is. I would give, and have given, a "woo" that very book and asked them to read it first so we can discuss it. How on earth do you expect me to make a good argument by paraphrasing Sagan and not showing the source? Yes, I would give a woo that book, and THEN, after they read it, THEN we can discuss it. Why are you portraying that as...god, I don't know, as me being a moron?

I have answered your questions as best I can! Honest to god I have. I am bawling my eyes out right now because I have tried so very hard.

Why the FARK do you insist on evidence and then ask me to paraphrase the evidence instead? Why can't you read it? Please stop tormenting and makuing fun of me! Please! You are killing me!

Why do you have such little confidence in yourself? You can argue your own case, of course you can!

But that's where I learned it from! I dind't get it out of my own head, I learned it from those sources, and I agree with them, and they say it better than I can, and you could understand me if you'd just please read my sources.

You can explain yourself well enough.

I DONT!!! Is she black because she says she is?

That's what I'm asking you. Is she? Am I, if I say I am?

I DON'T KNOW!!! I'm white because I know I"m white. Idon't know how I know it. I know that I fit all the characteristics for white people, that all my ancestors were white as far back as we can go, so I say I'm white. Isn't that enough? What does make me white?

Am I white because I say so? I don't know, but I do say so. If you tried to tell me I wasn't white, I'd argue with you.

Now you begin to understand why your previous statements caused me to react.

I don't know. Why do you want me to say whatever it is you want me to say? What do you want me to say?

You said earlier that people could choose whatever "race" they wanted.

Can you give a direct quote?

I am angry that you won't read my sources, but you keep demanding to know why I think what I htink. I think it because I read many articles, which I have referenced, and I came to agree. I hope that if you read them, you might come to agree. I'll never know, because you won't read them.

I didn't say that. I am just opposed to reading documents because people think they are the final word on something.

You would not accept this from a Christian demanding that you read the Bible. Of course you wouldn't - you'd haul his ass through Purgatory and back. So why do you demand the same from me?

Evidently not. Please tell me how to speak.

Not how to speak, but how to argue. You cannot rely on other people to make your points for you. Think for yourself, form your own arguments, do not rely on authority.

That's what skepticism is all about.

No. please accept no more of my nonsense. I am totally nonsensical. I am, frankly, a moron.

Only if you think so. I don't. I just object to your argumentation: You rely on authority, you are unable to answer pertinent questions about your own claims, and you are most unwilling to question your own beliefs.

Yes, critical thinking is a bitch - but if you want to call yourself a skeptic, you will have to face such challenges as this one. You have to question your own beliefs. Even if it hurts. Or, rather: Especially if it hurts.

Slingblade, it's really not worth getting bent out of shape over it. CFLarsen gets off on that. Don't waste your time and energy with his antagonistic, condescending debating style.

I would be most grateful to know what issues you believe we cannot challenge.

While I was googling around yesterday I came across some interesting stuff...I don't remember the websites I visited and I don't feel like searching right now so bear with me, AS

It's cool.

Black and Hispanic parents are more likely than white parents in the USA to stress the value of science education in grade school and high school but only 3% of PhDs in science and engineering are awarded to blacks. Some theories suggest they are intimidated to enter a field that is so dominated by white people in this country.

Interesting. I've never heard the part about black and Hispanic parents being more likely than white parents to stress the value of science education in high school. It is noteworthy that blacks and Hispanics are underrepresented at the upper echelons of science education.

I'm a little embarrassed that I can name only one prominent black astrophysicist (and cosmology happens to be my favorite topic of interest in science), and that's Neil deGrasse Tyson. Dr. Tyson is the director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History in New York (as I suppose you already know), and has an undergraduate degree in physics from Harvard, a masters in astronomy from Texas, and a PhD in astrophysics from Cornell. Tyson was already a standout in astronomy at age 15, when he attracted the attention of Carl Sagan, who tried unsuccessfully to recruit him to do his undergraduate studies at Cornell.

I'm pleased to learn that Tyson has been recently appointed to be host of PBS' Nova ScienceNow, and we can see him regularly on television. I've been watching him sporadically for years on Discovery and the Science Channel, and now he has a permanent television home. He's not only bright, but also funny, warm, and very charming. You know what people on the street in NYC who know him say to him when they greet him in the street? "Hey, Dr. Tyson, how's the universe today?"

He he. He always has a jovial, good-natured response, despite hearing it constantly.

I have to say, I don't know if I buy the intimidation theory. It doesn't explain why women in general are underrepresented in the upper echelons of science either. I've heard it posited, but I absolutely don't buy it.

To examine a counterexample, look at law schools. Forty years ago nearly all the faces in the law school face books were those of men. That was true at nearly every law school in the country. Now, there are nearly very equal numbers of men and women in law school. Did men suddenly stop intimidating women about intruding on their turf in law schools? If so, why didn't the nerdier science guys stop being so intimidating? Come on, theorists can do better than that.

Obviously this forum is dominated by white males. Perhaps we could also look to the reasons why there are proportionally so few females here as well and maybe find a link to why there are so few black people.

I don't know if there is a link between the two, but it is interesting on both counts.

Who here has treated you as different or stupid?

As for the original topic: I support MLK's birthday as a federal holiday, but "black history" month is silly and should be abolished.

Agreed. MLK day celebrates the achievement of an extraordinary person in American history for his extraordinary achievements. "Black history month" celebrates black people for... being black. As usual, "The Onion" put it best in a March 1st issue: "White history year resumes".

I'm a little embarrassed that I can name only one prominent black astrophysicist (and cosmology happens to be my favorite topic of interest in science), and that's Neil deGrasse Tyson.

He's the only one I can name as well. I like his science minute podcasts and if you haven't already, check out his books. I go to the Museum of Natural History a couple of times a year and would love to run into him. Actually, I would love to hear his take on this topic (underrepresentation of minorities in science/skepticism).

First, I don't get your defensiveness.

Second, actually, you don't get to pick your ethnicity or "race" either. It is largely decided for you by accident of birth. Your heritable characteristics are handed down to you by your ancestry, not by your own choice. Sorry that nature happens to inconvenient that way, but it is.

Calling yourself black doesn't make you black, and persons who are born black and are easily identifiably so visually do not get to choose to be WASPish or Asian or anything else. Again, pretending it is the way you wish it to be doesn't make it so.

As for whose business it is, well, one group for whom it is their business is governments at all levels (federal, state, and local). They want to know for all sorts of purposes. Some examples: birth certificates (your ethnic/racial identity starts before you can even talk or read, so no, you don't choose your ethnic identity; initially, your mom probably does, or at least the cultural part of it), marriage licenses and/or certificates, certificates of divorce, death certificates, census forms, applications for admission to colleges and universities, applications for scholarships, applications for government grants or other set-asides, etc. By the way, there are possible legal consequences. You could go to prison for faking being black and getting awarded a government contract set aside for minorities on that basis, for instance.

I might be interested in knowing if we're discussing a topic like race or ethnicity, like we are in this thread. Please read the thread title. Now, why did you go on this little rant of yours? I asked very nicely for input from black Americans or others about the thread topic. I'm genuinely interested. Sure, Claus and I have gone on a little derail about "blackness" and "race," but he hasn't gotten all defensive about it. I suggest you chill. No one has gotten ugly about it.

If you don't want to talk about it, then don't. You don't get to decide if we may discuss it, however. We'll talk about race and ethnicity if we like.

I don't get to decide, but you don't either. You know who does decide? The Cherokee Nation. They have legal rules about what constitutes a legal Cherokee. You can't simply decide you're one and have them let you in. You have to prove it.

I have no idea what inspired that. No one in this thread is trying to "win" about racial issues. The only actual debate going on is with Claus, who seems to be denying that race and ethnicity have any meaning at all. We know he's being silly.

AS

I agree that the racial experience in America is 99% what one looks like, as opposed to one's actual heritage, etc. There are estimates derived from genetic admixture testing that 30% of white-identified people in America have recent black/african american ancestry, that's about 75 million people, or more than twice as many people as are black-identified in America. Incidentally, the same studies indicate that 10% of black-identified people in America have no discernable black/african admixture. There are other intesting numbers out there, such as that 10% of south asians choose to identify as black/african american on various forms that ask one to identify their race/ethnicity. It would be interesting to see if that disproportionately the chose of darker-skinned south asians.

So, I'm leaving till I get better. I hope I get better.

I'll see you all sometime. I'll miss you.

Sling, after all you've had, I have no doubts at all that you'll come right.

And if you ever need some run over, there's a Kiwi bulldozer here fired up and ready to trample!

Kia Kaha (Stay strong)

Be back soon, we need you more than you need us.

May I remind everyone that the words OPPRESSION and DOMINANCE are in EVERY defintion of racism?

Well, you're wrong:

racism

Main Entry:
rac·ism
Pronunciation:
\?r?-?si-z?m also -?shi-\
Function:
noun
Date:
1933
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race 2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

Can anyone tell me when whites were EVER OPPRESSED or DOMINATED by non-whites, or blacks, or whomever?

Irrelevant. Racism is racism, hate is hate whether a political or cultural dominance exists or not.

It's about applying critical thinking to your own beliefs.
You, unter are one of the prize twats of the universe.

You have no class, no skills and you're an internet wimp, picking on the weak, comfortable that some real bloke isn't going to bulldoze you into the snot-heap you really are.

What a tough guy, unter. I hope you're proud of yourself.

So have I. I've had my ass kicked and my dignity and self-esteem trampled on from the age of 6 for not being like everone else. Been there, done that.

I don't champion the different. I champion the individual. Those who are different don't need to be cheered for that. We need to be cheered for who we are, for the good that we do, for the good that we try to do. Pointing out the differences just makes the cuts deeper when they happen. I don't pride myself for the chance accident of having been born female or mixed, or being a nerd, or being smart, or for having an ass that looks nice in velvet. I pride myself on the combination of the parts, I take pride in being me.

No one ever gets to champion me for any of those parts. No one ever gets to walk up to me and treat me as just one of those parts. I fought a goddamned war in order to be able to be me. I'm damn good at this fight.

Someone should extend an invitation to the Infidel Guy.

Infidel posts here sometimes. He was at TAM.

Also, he's uh, pretty damn easy on the eyes, but that's neither here nor there, that's me being a dirty old woman.
