"Black face" skit on Australian variety show

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

well, duh!

;)
When Legend thought I was serious, he was angry. Why? It's not any fun when someone makes stupid assumption and bad jokes based on your color or country of origin. Is it? When they assume you're stupid, lazy, uneducated, inexperienced, just because of what you look like or where you come from.

Unless it's done in blackface, of course.

I didn't alter your words in the least. I quoted you and responded with a comment... though I did read an "a" where there wasn't one. :)

That's OK mate, what you didn't read was the smiley that I forgot to put in my post. We're even. :)

Cheers,

Dave

ETA: I forgot to add that your observation was spot-on anyway.

For such a tough country I'm seeing a lot of bitching, pissing and moaning because people are criticizing a performance on a TV show.

So we're double even. ;)

Words to live by. An exercise in button-pushing that should be instructive to many. I'm grateful to yourself and others for your part in MY continuing education.

:D

BTW I reckon legend was on to it before me. Bloody kids! Get off my lawn!

For 20+ years I've been singing " a bite of my fish sandwich.." and it's "a vegamite sandwich"? WTF??? Oh, the humiliation. It was bad enough I didn't know what chunder was. What the hell is vegamite? Is it like Dolomite?
Can we all make up and be friends? I'm starting to feel a little dirty. I'll bring the Lexington BBQ, Roger can bring the Rocky Mountain oysters and Akhenaten and all those whose toilets flush the wrong way can put another shrimp on the barbie.

Were you joking when you posted this?

I'd say blind jerks who have been granted the benefit of having a relatively homogeneous culture on an island-continent and are busy bungling the ONE cultural clash they have (with the natives) because they have no idea how to interact with others. But hey, just because you've internalized most of the fun parts of chav culture doesn't make you fruitcakes (what it does make you though...).

If it's a joke it's about as bad as the Hey Hey skit. If it's serious, it displays gross ignorance.

Wow, a joke as bad as the Hey Hey skit in a thread about Australians busy excusing the Hey Hey skit.

I was serious, obv, you ignorant descendant of rapists and thieves.

Some of your posts in other parts of the forum make sense and are even worthwhile. I'll put your "contribution" to this thread down to an aberration. I may change my mind if you keep posting crap like this.

Lionking, may I respectfully ask you to have a look at my post #246? It was an informative exercise and I believe the major players knew what was going on.

I don't mean to oppose your sentiment at all, but I'd like you to know that it's mostly smiles all round I think. No bad blood.

Cheers,

Dave

My posts rarely make sense and are never worthwhile - if you're as dumb as an Australian! Zing! Oh man, hope I don't get on TV and mock you ignorant Aussies, god, that would be hilarious.

ETA: Ooh, let me translate that into Aussie so Aussies have a shot at understanding.

Ooh, Crikey mate, my here postin on this forum ain't gonna make sense if youse an alligata wrasslin homie from down under. Ain't that a burn, mate? Crikey my show here ain't so gosh gee good that I don't get on the Teh-Veh and make fun of youse here Aussies in the down under, cause that would be hee-larioaus. Crikey!

Okay. You are utterly wrong.

What you're doing is "mak[ing] stupid assumptions and bad jokes based on [my] country of origin" and "assume [I'm] stupid, lazy, uneducated, inexperience...".

This is nowhere near, not even within the same solar system, to what happened on Hey Hey, because the skit wasn't even about race, it was about Michael Jackson. So don't twist things and exaggerate them to fit with your argument, because it falls down and the only person looking stupid is you. As I've said elsewhere, straw men aren't allowed. Turning an argument or fact into something it is absolutely not, isn't good for anyone.

So instead trying to play smart-***, get it right before you do.

Alex.

Your suggestions are worthy, I'm off to the fisho's to get some prawns and a few shrimps for the guests.

I'll see you fruitcakes in some other threads. Probably that stoopid, jingoistic Australia thread.

Alex, respectfully, you're entire argument and posture in this discussion is a strawman, so how can you not allow them? You're latest itemized postulation leads to a strawman, your Item 3.
If you're criticizing Connick for not understanding Australia, then you ought to develop a better understanding of America. We speak with much of that directness that Aussies pride themselves in. Connick was not implying anything. He was not lording his higher morality or our higher American standards over Australia. He was not hinting parenthetically that the group, show, hosts, producers, audience, and general population consisted of racists. For approximately the fifth time in this thread: He did not say what you keep saying he said, nor did he even imply it. Ergo, you are inferring what you want to read into his statements,... erecting a strawman, boxing at shadows, tilting at windmills.

As I said above, he was, in effect, "copping out".

If when I visited South Africa and saw a coworker order a black out of his way, saying, "Get out of the doorway ya stupid kaffer", I'd just responded by saying, "Heh heh, you'd sure get in trouble for talking like that in America", I'd never have been able to sleep with myself. While it might seem to be a neutral statement or mild putdown, it almost implies that I agree or find the statement funny, just as Harry's initial reaction to the skit did.

And I find his latter statement with the host to be even worse. He basically had so many balls juggling in that little act that he could've been a contestant on the show!

I'm a New Orleanean, like Connick. I grew up around direct-speaking Americans. Putting those two together, believe me when I tell you that he was saying nothing more than the words you can hear.

Well many Australians weren't too happy with him. What an outrage!

You'd never understand, you're not Australia.

Furthermore, it is not my "entire argument" at all. It was an addition to the body of my "argument".

And I don't care whose culture is whose, what GreyICE is trying to do is fundamentally problemed because he's comparing an apple with an orange.

Hah! And no, dolomite tastes better.

...the skit wasn't even about race, it was about Michael Jackson.

And what you're completely oblivious to is that the international bruhaha is about the blackface, not the content of the skit itself.

I have a feeling if the performers wore Jherri curl and sequined uniform type outfits (like Weird Al Yankovich in his "Eat It" video), neither Connick nor anyone else would have uttered a peep.
