The BBC isn't an ad-funded service. Go to https://www.bbc.com/ and point out the ads that aren't for other BBC content. There aren't any. The BBC is, ultimately, taxpayer-funded.

The BBC operates on a fundamentally different model from the American sources that you cite here, largely because the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine by Reagan in 1987 killed public-interest broadcasting and turned American news reporting into a for-profit corporate venture. That never happened to the BBC. There's no comparison.

Our SVT (public broadcasting, tax funded) is dealing with similar problems, and since we've had a decidedly right-leaning government for the past few years, funds have been cut back. SVT is expected to have many viewers, especially younger ones (not gonna happen), and at the same time be a more serious alternative to all other media, ie not be focused on number if viewers. ◊◊◊◊◊◊ if I know how they're supposed to do that.

The right call them left wing, the left call them right wing. So I suppose they do fullfil the fair and balanced requirement, at least..
