Split Thread Australian speaker Harry Jenkins resigns

Well, I've been a Labor supporter all my life, and I often buy the Australian, and I truly do not find it a Liberal mouthpiece. There are many straight down the middle reporters and commentators in that publication. Having said all that, I have to add that this Labor administration, IS the worst ever in my memory, and I'm 63 years old. The only way I could ever vote for them again is if the bitch is replaced with anyone else, including Rudd.
So for me, it's ABA and ABG.

"the bitch"? That's pretty pathetic. Gillard is dealing with the most difficult situation any Labor Government has had to deal with. They screwed up the election campaign badly, but Gillard finally seems to be acting as was expected to in public. The woodeness and monotone are finally being replaced by someone who sounds confident and informed.

If you have listened to the actual comments and explanations of events by the Government ministers, they have always sounded professional and competent. Move past the sound bites and 'opinion', and you find things are much more complex than they appear at first. Gillard has managed to get many contentious pieces of legislation through while have to deal with not just her own party, but several independents who could sink it at any time. It has taken a lot of hard work, which has paid off. The legislation has had to be a compromise, but the Libs could just stop their pathetic short term game, which they have clearly lost, and work on getting good legislation through for the good of the coutnry till they probably win the next election. Members of the Liberal party have thought the MRRT could have been much better, but because Abbott committed himself to total opposition, they have had no say in making it better. The fact is, that even before it is in, most Australians are waking up to the fact that the mining companies are making extraordinary profits out of resources you can only dig up once, and are now seeing the MRRT as reasonable. The WA government has even increased it's own mining royalties, and it is a Liberal Government. Countries around the world that are resouce rich are also increasing taxes on mining. You are a mug if you don't.

Spot on AUP. How long would Abbott have kept a minority government intact? We would have had to re-calculate Planck time.

What sticks in peoples mind is the blatant lie of: No government led by me will ever introduce a carbon tax. end quote. End Gillard!

I find it utterly amusing that the Bolt/shockjocks/Australian triumvirate has not laid a glove on Gillard lately.

Two more years. Suffer Liberals.

No they weren't. They would like to have been able to but the numbers wouldn't allow it. Instead they were going to roll him at preselection and put Brough into his seat.

Sources please.

That would be the article that I linked to earlier.
It does seem a bit strange that this has now became an issue.
It was not last week.
The conservatives are complicant in their inaction.

And Gillard just as much or even more so given her promotion of the man. She knew he was crooked and elevated him. Abbott was in the process of ousting him.

Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey said Mr Slipper, a former parliamentary secretary to John Howard, was about to be sacked anyway.

"We have never nominated Peter Slipper for a position since John Howard sacked him as a parliamentary secretary some years ago," Mr Hockey told Channel Seven.

"We were in the process of removing him from the Liberal Party. This is such a fine person, such a man of upstanding character, that Julia Gillard has decided that she wants him to hold this high office."

Wah, wah, wha.

The Libs woulda, coulda, mighta.

Pathetic rationalisations. Gillard trumped the Libs. Two more years. Suffer.

What sticks in my mind is that we have a carbon tax/trading scheme in place at last. The irony is that after The Greens blocked the first one, the second scheme is not really much better. They would have been better to let the first one through, then improve it over time as people came to realise that a price on fossi fuels is not the end of the world, and will actually be beneficial over time.

Well it will be back to square one if that happens.

Indeed.
Speculating on this issue is a lot of fun, we will have to see how it plays out.
While strategically it is a very sneaky (even clever) move of Gillard's, the costs ultimately may well exceed the benefits.

And if we do go back to square #1, suddenly Thompson and Wilkie come starkly back into play.

I've said it before, this is the best fun we have had in federal politics in my life time - perhaps ever.

Sure, why not? :)

One girlfriend I had was great in the physical stakes (if you get my drift), so I would say she was the "best fun". But she was also a moron and at times an embarrassment to be around, which made her "the worst".

"Fun" and "worst" are not mutually exclusive.

Hmm, think again.

So, what you are saying is that Gillard was not telling porkies when she said, and I quote: "there will never be a carbon tax in any government that I lead." end quote.

No, I think she genuinely believed that she could defer putting a price on carbon until 2013 and was trying to take the heat out of the line Abbott was running at the time that emissions trading was a 'great, big new tax'.

Put it this way, what we have now is a minority government, which she is leading, and Abbott isn't. The game changed, Gillard adapted to it, and One Track Tony still hasn't worked it out.

It's really One Trick Tony, and there is evidence that the public is starting to see through him.
