Atheist burns Koran and Bible

My three year old knocks over chairs when he wants attention.

We had thought that he ought to have grown out of that sort of thing by this age.

Apparently not.

Meh. Brisbane is the Florida panhandle of Australia, generally. Spot the brain cell (Athon and a few others excepted, of course!).

Personally, I wonder (1) if he really is an atheist - why would an atheist even bother with denigrating religious texts in this way at all?, and (2) if this is just a stunt for some other reason.

Gainesville is in North Florida, not the Panhandle. Yes, there is a difference.

He is an atheist. He runs the youtube channel CasewithScience which I subscribe to. He appears to be suspended (not surprising given youtubes policies.) If you search youtube for him you should get plenty of responses.

If you watched the video, you might get his point.

Seems that having nutcases like Terry Jones and Fred Phelps isn't limited to Religious groups.

This is starting to get very silly.

A proper book-burning has as a goal to go into homes, libraries, schools and other places where you might find books; confiscate the offending literature and expunge it from history.

This is some sort of weird RL trolling; a kind of voodoo doll version of book burning where you print words on a dead tree at your own expense and then burn it.

I feel much the same way. These recent book burning events are very much tantrums in my mind.

do you support the burning of books?

As long as people buy their own and they're not some kind of museum pieces, they can buy any book they want, really. All it does is remove some existing supply and create some demand for the printers. I'm sure just about any printing company or copyright holder (when not yet expired) would be more than happy to print you as many copies as you need for your book barbecue, be it the Bible or the Quran or The God Delusion.

Book burning by totalitarian regimes or theocracies do something only because it's combined with being able to enforce that no more copies are printed. So if they removed and burned all of some book from libraries -- and yes, occasionally even private homes -- they are really preventing more people from reading them.

But burning a bible in a country with a functioning free market? What's that going to achieve?

The same as burning a flag, I suppose. Not much. "Yeah, we kinda got that you hate [insert country or book] from the demonstration, the chants and the signs."

The quote is hardly supposed to be taken literally.

Were his actions better or worse than throwing consecrated crackers in the trash?

Neither. Just about the same in childishness. Probably about the same in insult since disrespecting the holy breaded snacks is an excommunicable offense in the major religious organization that makes a big deal about it.
