Sexist, eh? Which part of PZ's scientifically-themed comedy routine implied the belief that men and women should be treated in different ways and are best suited to different roles in society?

With defenders like this, PZ hardly need enemies. (And wtf is a "scientifically-themed comedy routine," btw?) A best we can say he is socially inept around women. If he pulled this "comedy routine" at his university with a female student or associate, the woman would have good grounds for a sexual harassment charge.

pz is upset.

I’m getting a flood of email and tweets telling me to “kiss and make up” with thunderf00t, because this debate is hurting the movement, and is over such trivial, petty problems.

My official response to such diminution of a real problem: **** YOU.

This is a serious, substantive difference of opinion, and I think how we resolve it will shape the direction the atheist movement takes. If we minimize it and accept the Thunderf00t position, we will dribble away and become increasingly irrelevant, serving no one but an increasingly negligible fraction of white male interests. If we stand up for equality, we have a shot at replacing religious ideology in this country with something better.

PZ, like most of the actors in this drama, feels he is far, far, far more important than he actually is. The "atheist movement"? Seriously? I suspect 99.9% of the world's atheists have no idea who he (or thunderfoot) is.

Well, his interaction with the woman in the video speaks for itself.

And it says to you that women and men should have different roles in society? Or did you have some other definition of sexism in mind? Words mean things. Just what kind of sexism was PZ doing by joking about sex with that woman?

Hey, since we're talking about the source video, did you catch the part where she put her hands over her head in a little victory jig? It's almost like she gets the joke.

I'm not a defender of PZ in general, nor do I believe everyone should be self-assorted into Team PZ and Team TF. I do believe that individuals should be judged by their own actions in the relevant social context, and in this case there is literally zero bad going on. No one's feelings were hurt, no one confused the joke for an actual sexual advance, and a good time was had by all.

Those little banters would have got him in a whole lot of trouble were I work. If one of my staff would have pull this stunt, he'd be working on his resume.

I could assure you that all my female staff would not have appreciated his jokes, but most would not have complain directly. Many sexual harassment defense starts with "But it was only a joke..."

A basic error in that article is that PZ thinks that in order to be an atheist/skeptic you have to want to attend (and preferably speak at) conferences for atheists and skeptics.

Nit-Pick:
PZ thinks that being part of "the atheist movement" means you attend conferences, etc. I'm pretty sure he's aware that there are plenty of atheists/skeptics who don't care to be part of this movement.

Replace PZ with ERV and Watson with Thunderf00t, and then we can all choose up sides and fling **** at each other. Yay for groupthink!

:crowded:

You can't have a group without groupthink.

I'm a little hazy on the "movement" distinction here... I don't want to go to conferences, am I not a part of the movement?

Actually, she didn't just seem to get the jokes, she seemed like a groupie. And PZ "the dirty old man of atheism" Myers felt inspired by that, adding more and more jokes about how he wanted to **** her. What an empowering episode.

At least he was not in an elevator.

Jeez. it's hard to keep up with all this stuff , what is this "freeze peach" thing they keep referring to?

Are you being serious here? :)

"Freeze peach" is A-Plussese for "free speech". I'm not exactly sure how that particular expression came to be, A+ has a whole lexicon of idiosyncratic vocabulary, including "feelers" and "<blank>splaining".

And of those who do (especially the ones outside of the blog/Youtube echo chamber) even fewer care who they are.

I was being serious. Assumed it was due to some obscure incident some where , I genuinely didn't get the pun in it's context. It's obvious now.
No idea what "feelers" are either.

Feelers are the same thing as fee fees. Feelings to those of us who use real words.

Funny thing. When A+ started out they were all about not caring about "your fee fees" but now they've made themselves all about fee fees with the person who gets the most offended being the one who gets to control the conversation.

gas lighting is in wikipedia
dog whistle in in wikipedia

Did you catch that bit where one of their mods ceepolk says "I don't give a **** about the atheist movement at all."

Now if we couple that with her comment on the Jen McCreight thread

"bookstore feminists are why I'm not a supporter of feminism"

We appear to have a moderator who is unclear on the concept. :eye-poppi

Oh, it's ok, she's a womanist. However, since that seems to be defined as being a Black feminist, it doesn't seem logical to say that you're not a feminist if you are a womanist.

On the second page of that thread, there's another of those puzzling statements. When anyone complains about they way they're attacked, they're told off for 'tone policing'. Yet, someone who just got suspended for objecting to the way their post was moderated and paraphrased is advised,"it might be best just to realize that you have said some things in ways that have upset some folks."
