Ditto - registered way back, and sporadically post. I'd post more often, but the main thread moves so dadgummed fast that I can't keep up. Some very fine discussions, though, and not a woman-hater in sight.

I'm there too, but I have trouble fitting in because I don't reflexively hate the right people, and I'm not exactly into belittling human beings (and potential allies) as a mode of discourse, I'd rather talk to my opponents than mock them.

I'll leave the baseless insults and senseless groupthink to the Pitters and the Plussers, TYVM.

I'm so on Dawkin's side. She was asked for coffee by a male (oh my) in an elevator (the horror), she said no, he went no farther (how dare he). End of story, (kill him).

Seems some want it both ways.................. for themselves.

:) :) :)

I know my pubs - this is the upstairs bar at Dewey's Flatiron on 5th Ave in New York. Taken during NECCS, but not sure which one.

From the blog:
TF edited out PZ saying “By the way, that last joke, if you are doing this in a classroom, don’t use it.” He also edited out the woman jokingly asking PZ for his hotel room key.

Interestingly, regarding PZ Myers sexually addressing a woman on stage, Michael Nugent uses the same sort of apologetics that sexual harasser use when they are caught.
He doesn't seem to be aware that when a woman replies with a sexual joke to a sexual joke, this doesn't necessarily mean that she felt comfortable with being sexually addressed in the first place. She usually just replies so because she doesn't want to look like a victim. And the man saying "I'm just joking" afterwards doesn't make it better. It's just the same that harassers do.
And while Mr. Nugent is so concerned with context, he completely misses the context in this case, which is that PZ Myers wasn't there as a stand-up comedian and that this wasn't a bar, but he was a key-note speaker at a conference. If that's not an inappropriate context for sexual offers, then what is? I mean, they keep crying about secular conventions not being "safe spaces", but THAT'S ok? And even if both of them were happy and joking about it, they'd better do that when they're among themselves, not in public on a conference where PZ Myer's behavior just sends the message: "It's funny to treat women like ****-toys!".

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
--- Animal Farm

Some decent points made but then the conclusion of the post is speaking out against Tf00t's attempts to "ostracize" members of the sceptical community. I wonder where the outrage was when FtB was trying to turn TF into "a pariah"?

Shouldn't conference supporters and organizers be outraged at both TF's and FtB's attempts at blacklisting fellow skeptics and secularists? I'm sick to death of it myself, having dealt with blow-ups from incompatible speakers.

PZ wasn't the keynote, IIRC, and Skepticon talks are generally expected to be funny. Rebecca's talk from that year was nothing but humourous riffing on obscure Xmas traditions.

Also, Nugent explicitly agrees with you on whether this behavior was inappropriate on PZ's part. I disagree, because I tend to think that intent is magic.

You what? Is it a comedy show?

I will digress here, but in a hall that has been rented for a meeting, yes one can expect some level of respect between people there. But once you step out into the hallways that are open to the public be aware that we live in a free speech country (USA), so that level will drop and one can expect to hear and see things one does not like, it is the nature of the beast.

They're overmoderated as it is. Keep the admins along with ceepolk and SubMor to do the dirty work, fire the rest. A forum that size only needs a couple of mods.

At the rate they're driving away new posters, they'll never grow beyond what they are now.

Did you see what they did to backpackergirl ? Genderqueer totally eclipsed feminism with Setar demanding the feminist leave the board. I wonder if RadFem Hub picked up on that ?

I like the criticism from ooopz that was "Hidden for trolling"
It's so good to see no-one here has learned that to anyone sane, you all look like hypersensitive hypocrites... so much that you've come up with an entire cornucopia of made up words to shut down discussion with. But I suppose it's only "tone policing" when _they_ do it, and I suppose that ignorant bitch that dared post here deserved it. Or maybe she was just being sincere and you **** all over her regardless, because you are you, and she's not.

Happy new year, you silly professional victims. I'm so glad you are all locked in this forum. The people in the asylum always think it's the outside world that's mad.

In other news I checked out the Slymepit and really saw nothing wrong with it. I too was expecting a seething hotbed of woman-hatred and I was surprised to see nothing of the sort. It must be my privilege showing.

You must have missed all the hilariously insightful jokes about how certain feminists aren't sexually attractive.

And women are expected to get objectified on stage? Thanks, I didn't know that.
Also, Nugent explicitly agrees with you on whether this behavior was inappropriate on PZ's part.
In my view, PZ Myers acted like a sexist pig. I doubt that Nugent would agree with that.

I'm registered on the Pit were I've been posting sporadically since I'm disgusted with JREF at the moment (don't ask). You can post as a guest without registering.

I like it because they keep me up to date on the latest hypocrisies from FtB, A+, Skepchick, et al, saving me the trouble of reading that crap myself.

This **** is the FFTB junkyard dog, always ready to bark at noises but totally incapable of understanding them. So, the squeal of a burglar's tires will receive the same, predictable, yapping response as will a drunk guy stumbling home while singing "Born in the USA".

Nerd has several stock phrases which he rotates in some kind of way only he understands. Once in a while, Meyers will use a big word Nerd has never seen before, and boy will Nerd jump on that ************. Count on it turning up in every post for a couple weeks.

NoR is one of the reasons I stopped bothering with reading Pharyngula much any more (well, there were other reasons; Salty Droid's rather eye-opening posts on Myers caused me to take a serious re-evaluation of PZ's Playpen and Sirkus of Smirky 'Skeptuality' in a major way); but I have to say, the major league nastiness of commenters such as Nerd and Caine, Femme du Some Damn Pretentious Faux Frog Thing or Another were good reasons to start avoiding the site.

What is actually up with this guy, anyway? Is he really a scientist, or just some noisy poseur?

IMO, he sounds like some bitter, burned-out highschool sciences teacher, PO'd with the world because he was never able to do better in his chosen profession.

I'm not clear on what is sexist (in any sense of the word) about a person joking with another person about sex on stage, when it is abundantly clear that no expectations of actual sex are at play. Please, do enlighten us on this point.

Do you think it's appropriate for the setting?
