Ariel Castro: Not my fault...

His sentence, which he accepted in order to avoid a possible death penalty, is life without parole plus 1000 years. There is no question that he will die in prison. The question is how long it will take.

given how prisoners respond to child abusers and rapists, I'd give it 5 years

He'll never step foot outside of protective custody. Ever. He will live the rest of his pathetic life in a 8x10 cell, all by his ****** self. Too bad it's not 2x6 and 6 feet under.

Is there a reason for such a long sentence? I mean it's not like he'll survive even 10% of it.

I think it's that there's no life without parole there. If he got 100 years, at some point during his remaining life he'd probably qualify for a parole hearing (not a snowball's chance he'd actually BE paroled of course) and that would cause another media circus, more money spent, a spotlight on the victims again, etc. This way he just goes in the building and we never hear about him again until another prisoner shanks him dead in the breakfast line.

Castro was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole to run consecutively with 100 - 10 years sentences that are each consecutive to the others. If Castro was pardoned for his murder conviction today, his earliest parole date would be in 3013. Since he was sentenced to mandatory minimums on those charges, he doesn't even get good time credits during those terms.

I doubt he'd last 1 year in Prison much less 10, because he's going to be popular with a lot of prison gangs.
Prisons are full of baby and child rapist and murderers who are no better then Castro. I don't see them caring about those women or Castro. The inmates are in no position to take the moral high ground either.
I had no idea Michelle was so small at 4'7" which makes this even worse.

No, but things like Castro are considered the lowest of the low.

Pediphilies are the lowest of the low.

Remember that Castro held these women for ten years. His youngest victim was 14 at the time of her abduction. He's a "high profile" pedophile. Castro won't be able to blend in by lying about his conviction.

His journey will be about finding space in a medium security prison where he can have some semblance of an ordinary existence. I don't know if Ohio has mandatory classifications, but he won't be able to go directly to medium with an aggravated murder conviction and no parole date.

ETA: I should have said his journey will be about staying alive and finding a space in a medium security facility.

I am against the death penalty, but for this guy I'd make an exception.
I agree.

One of the major news channels said life was better than death because it was cheaper and we are not gong to hear any more about him in the future.

Actually I think the news channels will ensure we do hear much more about him than we want to.

At his sentencing hearing, Ariel Castro claims -- in front of Michelle Knight! --that he maintained a "home full of harmony" with his victims, that he never hurt them, and sex with them was consensual. He says he's a victim of childhood abuse and asks for forgiveness. The judge is now explaining the legal definition of "sexually violent predator."

I am against the death penalty, but for this guy I'd make an exception.

What if he's telling the truth?

What if he's telling the truth?
So drop a few years off, since he still kidnapped them, held them prisoner, and raped them statutorily if not otherwise. But assuming he's telling the truth, and he didn't beat them and they were naughty girls anyway, and he's so remorseful, should we be kind and keep him in prison for only half as long, say 50 of those ten year sentences in a row?

But wait, if he's telling the truth, that presumably means that he considers lost virginity a justification for his actions, so for that I suggest the sentence be doubled.

So he kept them prisoner for a number of years and had sex with them. Is that any different from marriage where one person wants to get out but for one reason or another cannot?

OK he had three women. That would be one difference. Another is that the chains are visible. Any others?

That may be the single dumbest comment I've ever seen on this board.

Castro's 1,400-square-foot home was reconfigured to keep the women's whereabouts a secret, FBI agent Andrew Burke testified. The back door was outfitted with an alarm; bedspreads and curtains obscured parts of the home; and a porch swing was placed in front of the stairs leading to the rooms where Castro held the women and girl hostage.

In the room where Berry and her daughter were held, the doorknob was removed, a lock was affixed to the outside and a hole was cut through the door for ventilation because the windows had been boarded up from the inside, Burke said.

Amanda Berry was 16 when she was grabbed off the street and Gina DeJesus was 14. Michelle Knight was 21, and authorities didn't look for her very hard because her troubled family claimed she ran away. You think they all cheerfully submitted to a decade of uninterrupted imprisonment? You think Amanda was happy to give birth without medical care? You think they lied about what he did? They kept diaries of their experiences. You think his ex-wife lied about the broken bones he inflicted on her? Castro pleaded guilty to 937 counts, after giving authorities details of his crimes for hours. You think his confessions were lies?

Another might be that however difficult it is to get out of a relationship, most marriages (at least in this culture) begin voluntarily, and in most cases the relatives of the bride have some notion of where she has gone.

What exactly do you mean by "for one reason or another"? Please, be explicit about what sort of reasons you're including here.

Most people who "cannot" get out of a marriage actually can, they just aren't willing to endure the process. In fact, the only reason I can think of where a spouse truly cannot get out of a marriage (as in, it is not possible) is if their partner actually held them captive physically. If that's what you mean, then yes, it's the same. But since you said "for one reason or another", suggesting that the reasons you refer to are both varied and unimportant, I suspect that's not what you had in mind, in which case I cannot see how it is not different.

Pedantry alert*

Pedophilia is the attraction to prepubescents. If his youngest victim was 14, he is not likely a pedophile; a rapist and a monster but not a pedophile.

We would normally put guys with his resume in administrative segregation (there are many other less nice terms for it). It's not a fun place either, just fewer people trying to have their way with you and a decreased chance of getting shanked. I'm not sure if that's an option in long term incarceration (I worked for INS so our population was transient).
