He is allowed to call anyone he wants a Communist, just like some people are allowed to call other people other things.

Before we know it, these nuts will be calling Thomas Jefferson a communist because he believed in the separation of church and state.

West should be allowed to call anyone he wants a Communist, just like some people are allowed to call other people other things.

Ah yes, the old "people call other people things!" argument. It's a childhood classic that never seems to go out of vogue.

I don't see how calling attention to West's comments translates into a call for censorship.

However, Congress does have the ability to censure (not quite censor but similar) its members.

In 1832 a member of Congress was censured for insulting the Speaker and in 1866 a member was censured for introducing a bill "insulting the House" with "unparliamentary language".

Allen West said:
I believe there's about 78 to 81 members of the Democrat Party who are members of the Communist Party.
The U.S. has a Democrat Party?

Are you sure he isn't talking about Thailand? But then being a center-right party, they probably aren't successors to the long-gone Communist Party of Thailand.

Maybe another country then?

To nitpick the questioner a bit, it is rather hard to be a "card carrying Marxist". Certain groups are explicitly Marxist, but not exclusionary. And I don't recall there ever being a "Marxist Party" for one to get a card from.

The "International Socialist" bit is interesting. Technically the school of thought and organisation with that name are Trotskyist bends of Marxism. So I am not sure why the questioner separated them. There are certainly internationalists who are not of that path, but they don't have a group membership...

The Communist Party USA is not what it use to be. They started becoming Democrats under the FDR Administration.

Nothing new here.

Yep. They started realizing what parts of communism would work well with our system and focused on those, abandoning the ridiculous stuff. and as a result, most of the social progress since FDR has been made by those "former communists". Nice that they've been able to learn, adapt and improve, while some are still back at the "name-calling" level. But then, conservativism is, by definition, against change of any kind.

Nothing new here.

I'll add my two cents:

I have never been a member of the Communist Party. Nor do I seek one.

Buuuut, the effort to "root out" Communists in the government is done under the auspices that they are subversive simply for the benefit of a foreign power.

Although I do know that some radical Marxist groups are sympathetic to Communist governments that are very much juxtaposed to liberal Democracy (take N-K for example), the Communist Party, with a big or little 'c' is not one to advocate subjugating the country to another nation.

As much as it would irritate these right-wing nationalists to admit it, the left-wingers are just as patriotic as they are. The Marxists desire to improve the nation is just as strong as those who like to wrap themselves in the flag at every opportunity of public expression.

I think the examples are abound, even going back to the McArthy era and before, where many through-and-through Communists were still primarily seeking to restore equality into the society, through women's suffrage and equal rights to racial minorities.

It's a darn shame that "internationalism" gets so tied up with party unity and party [what's the thesaurus entry where you just accept that's passed on from above??? Stick that here]. At one point it certainly was the same as the proclamation that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights".

In a single word: equality.

Marxists by definition are internationalists, so it is impossible for them to be patriotic Americans. Their allegiance or model of government is always directed to an anti-American government or ideology.

Every member of the Republican party is a racist since the KKK likes the Republicans. Okay maybe that's a bit over the top, but only a bit.

Isn’t it interesting that virtually all the members of the Progressive (communist) Caucus are either Black or Jewish?

I'm still reeling that the incredible zombie following of this kind of rhetoric is so pervasive.

I just choked on the O'Reilly Factor claiming a grass roots protest against ALEC was a "totalitarian" act.

Bill O'Reilly: The far left demanding censorship; March, 2012.

It will be a day or two before I can post a link since it was tonite's program but this was the header:
Impact Segment
Far-left group threatens American companies

Guests: TBA A far-left group is threatening economic pain against big companies like McDonald's and conservative groups--what does that mean, exactly?
The group in question was a group that put pressure on McDonalds among other businesses to withdraw from ALEC.

Which group is it that O'Reilly finds so scary? Color of Change

So now a black grass roots organization that voices an opinion against a pro-corporate group with tremendous lobby power is a totalitarian organization.

Here's that well known commie, Lawrence McDonald on the subject of ALEC.
Corporations continue to pull out of ALEC

Major corporations are continuing to withdraw their membership from the conservative corporate advocacy group, American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Fast-food giants McDonald's and Wendy's have clarified that they are no longer members and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced they will no longer be providing the organization with grants. Other major companies that pulled out within the past week are Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Kraft. Now, shareholders are beginning to call on companies to disclose their ties to ALEC.

What is ALEC? Last year, a representative from People for the American Way came to The Last Word to share an exclusive report on ALEC's widespread influence over this country's policies. ALEC was created in 1976 by large corporations for the purpose of writing model legislation that favored their interests, shaping regulations and laws that shape this country. In 2009, 826 of ALEC's special interest model bills were introduced in state legislatures and 115 of those bills were enacted into law, in some cases verbatim.

Apparently this is not the first time O'Reilly used the term, "totalitarian liberal" for publicly expressing Progressive views.

O'Reilly Invents "TL" Term -- For "Totalitarian Liberal" -- And Claims That NPR Is The "TL Vatican"; March, 2011.

O’Reilly Slams Anti-Limbaugh Radio Campaign: ‘There’s Something Very Fascist About All This’; March, 2012.

This kind of rhetoric is nuts! That the rhetoric is mainstream and not just Glenn Becky and Rush Limbaughy trash talk is concerning.

Totalitarian would be to clap all of the organizers and attendees at their gatherings in irons to await trial for bribery.

They shoulld be allowed to post bail while charges are brought and prosecuted.
