It is not reasonable to say that the Progressive Caucus are people who "oppose free markets and individual economic freedom" and "want to redistribute wealth".

ETA: Politifact rated this one "Pants on Fire" even with West's post-hoc attempts to spin what he said as something other than what he said.

You misread me I was showing those as statements coming from the politician not that politifact said it. Politifact was quoting him.
We are in agreement that it came from Allen West.

That's the one. :D In recent years they've really doubled down on the personality cult they've created around Avakian--which is hilarious because Avakian has no personality. I tried listening to one of his talks once - a mistake I will never make again.

What's traditionally happened in the US at least is that the CP-USA ablates to the mainstream. Even such seemingly normal things like trade unions, the 40-hour work week, and allowing Black people to go unlynched were once associated with and only really advocated for by Communists. After normal people think things like, "yeah, maybe it would be OK to let some Black people live," then the CP-USA drops the cause like a hot potato.

The Communist Party USA is a bit of an odd organisation. Normally you have political parties on the one hand (The Socialist Party USA), and coalitions on the other (The DSA). The Communists have sort of wavered between the two, and in recent years have headed into more coalition territory. That is, they don't put forward ideas or candidates, but back the ones that are already being advanced. They caused a lot of hassle when they endorsed health care reform with a public health option, whilst all the "true" lefties were flocking to Medicare for All. Basically, they are impotent, but still try to keep their big name out there. If you are looking for socialists, I wouldn't start with them.

Fascism isn't a much of threat to the USA. We're simply too large and spread out to have a homogenous national identity. Sure, there's a few flickers among the super-Christian far-right and it makes for good hyperbole but our entire national identity would have to change radically before we would get our own little Mussolini.

Ditto communism.

Problem was that the CP-USA also proclaimed Joe Stalin as a "The Great Friend Of The Workers" Stalin's Russia as an almost ideal State, and quit any criticism of Nazi Germany right after the Nazi/Soviet pact of 1939.
And there were plenty groups advocating the 40 Hour weak, Racial Justice, etc aside from the CP-USA and did not embrace Totalrianism of the Right Ideological flavor.

West is a crackpot, and his statement is smear politics at it's worst,but don;t try to sell me on the virtues of CP-USA.

Time to get out T Shirt with the picture of Che Guevera and the statement:

"Communism killed 20 Million people and all I got was this lousy T-SHirt".

West should be allowed to call anyone he wants a Communist, just like some people are allowed to call other people other things.
