Not strange. The conservative marketing machine works very hard to attach negative connotations to the term as a rhetorical device. Try listening to the religious right some time, for instance, and you may hear "secular" or "humanist" used as slurs as well.

This whole dicussion is pointless until we get a definition of Socialist that everybody can agree with.
To me, it is a matter not so much of favoring specific programs but of attitude toward the free market and private enterprise: A great many people who generally favor the free market have swung around to the idea we have to have some kind of universal health care. Are they Socialists?
Obame does not have any basic hostility toward a free market, therefore, IMHO,he is not a Socialist. If he did have some idea of replacing the free market with total government control of the economy, he never would have gotten within a million miles of the White House.
I define Socialits as somebody who thinks that the free market and the Profit motive are basically evil. You don't find many of those in the US.
