Ancient Pyramids and other structures, astronomical alignment & similarity.

No problemo. I edited my post to keep you Ra-ists happy.

Just the first pic I googled which showed perspective and a vanishing point. You could replace the buildings with date palms if that helps.

Not the buildings so much, but the Nile Valley is nowhere near so deep and narrow, at least not where the Pyramids are.

So they were symbols of the Pharaoh's power?

No, they were resurrection machines. Pharaoh's power enabled them.

One of the requirements to qualify for a Pyramid was deadness, which is rarely a position of power.

The symbol of Pharaoh's power might better be said to have been the Double Crown.

OK I don't really know a lot about this subject, just the usual pop culture stuff from TV documentaries like "Mighty Isis" and excellent scholars like Erich Von Daniken <snort>.

I just wondered if the idea about perspective and illusions was referenced anywhere in the actual archeology, or whether it was just something invented by modern filmmakers.

ETA: I also recommend the Pratchett book.

No worries. You're doing good.

I really liked the music from 'Chariots of the Gods'. The scientific content, not so much, and I was but a callow youth back then. It was just that ridiculous, I guess,

I haven't read a hell of a lot about those aspects of the architecture, but I do know that they used a lot of visual tricks such as half-columns and things, but I think their favoured technique seemed to revolve around 'How can we make this sucker BIGGER?"

Other ancient cultures were right into false perspectives and stuff, I think, but that's all . . . umm . . . Greek to me.

I'll study up some on the Egyptian version, and return to dazzle yez with me knowledge.

Kewlies. I'm definitely on to that little project. I'm surprised I've not read it sooner, since I really like science fiction and fantasy. If I'd have known there were Pyramids in there I definitely would have read it.

Thanks again and Cheers.

ok lets sort this out in one go

the pyramid symbolise mountains, Zahi wrote a book about it

Mesoamerican pyramids symbolise mountains

Do I need to post cites that prove the thinking was the same for Ziggurats ?

I don't think that there is any connection through architecture, just that they are connected through sacred thought
;)

I had a professor in college who hypothesized that the Mexican and South American pyramids symbolized volcanoes.

If you haven't yet read it, you've absolutely got to read Pratchett's Discworld novel called Pyramids.
:)

Seconded.

Yep

The question struck me from another thread, about how different unconnected cultures had similar buildings of similar sizes.

Wilful ignorance on your part, apart from the base size of two structures thousands of miles and years apart which are not the same you have yet to show any similarity at all, In fact it has been proven to you by several posters that there are no similarities at all.
this on the most basic level
pyramid_gallery_great.jpg

is not even visually similar to this

it doesn't matter how many time you pretend otherwise
you're just desperate to prove to everyone you have some credibility
everyone knows you have none from the above kind of ridiculous statements you make.

Like a road or straight river vanishing into the distance.

Sorry, Mate.

I've just, finally, realised what you were getting at with this drawing.

I thought it was meant to represent the Nile Valley with 'mountains' down either side, and that's why I was so dismissive of it.

I see what you mean by the perspective making it look like a stairway to heaven (:)) and while It looks good, I still have some doubts about it being an effect that was intended from the outset.

Apart from anything else, the illusion wouldn't appear until after you'd built the thing. Even if the designers had predicted it, that's a lot of work to do just to see if the illusion really worked.

The other thing is that the evolution of Pyramid building is easy to trace, and the earlier step Pyramids and low-angle Pyramids wouldn't have produced the effect, so it wouldn't likely have occured to anyone to try for it in later versions.

Again, apologies for misunderstanding earlier.

No apologies necessary.

I was curious about the idea that I saw on a TV show. I guess it could still be a slight possibility, but either way, I'm not too bothered about it.

Maybe this was mentioned umpty-someodd posts ago, but are the sizes of the pyramids being cited here the current dimensions, or the dimensions as they were built? Didn't the Egyptian pyramid have outer layers that have been removed/fell off that would make it even less similar to the Mesoamerican one?

We've been mixing and matching a bit, I think.

:)

The sides originally measured 230 metres (755 feet) or 440 Royal Cubits and they are currently 215 meters (705 feet) or 411 Royal Cubits

The mean error was originally 58 millimeters.

A demonstration casing stone in place

It originally stood 147 metres (480 feet ) or 280 Royal Cubits high. The Pyramidion comprising the top 9.5 metres (31 feet) is now no longer there.

Although the Pyramidion has never been found, it is believed to have been covered with electrum. (by me, anyway)

Most of the casing was dislodged in an earthquake in 1301 CE, and used in the construction of a nearby village - Cairo.

Silly question, but: How would the later stone thieves remove the blocks if they didn't have the technology? Did the Atlanteans/aliens come back to give them a hand?

Stone thieves?

Goddidit.

ETA: They only needed to move the blocks a few kilometres (miles). They used GR blimps.

mmm . . . versatile.

I somehow seemed to recall that blocks that fell off and/or were removed were used as building material in other places. Could be damn wrong though.

ETA: not that wrong, but still not totally right.

Nup, you're 100% correct. Recycling (stealing) of high-order resources like dressed stone was a common feature throughout the Dynasties. The Kings themselves were, in fact, the main culprits.

The earthquake and Giza's very close proximity to the future Cairo was just lucky happenstance.

10 points to Hufflepuff!

No, you miss the point. Why am I not suprised. Take 100,000,000,000 things made by humans, how many are similar?

Like look, here are some black and white pots. They are similar is China and Mesoamerica, does that mean they had contact, no.

Here are some pressure flaked knife blades , they are similar, does that mean they had contact? No.
