According to Phelps, God sent the shooter ... to punish the state governor ... for "mocking" the Westboro Baptist Church.

Their website announces that they are "continuing to pray for even worse punishment upon Pennsylvania".

People who love God can be dangerous too. In fact, I'd say more evil is done in the name of God than out of hatred of God.

I was at a funeral two weeks ago that the freako WBC cult group protested at. The gall of these people is amazing. They were protesting at a funeral of a 19 yr old Marine killed in Iraq. The kid’s parents are both retired Houston Police Officers. I belong to the Patriot Guard Riders and we found out that the WBC had pulled a permit to protest at the funeral about 20 hours before the event was to take place. We received permission from the family of the fallen soldier to attend the services. Even with extremely short notice, we had over 106 motorcycles show up. The Boy Scouts had lent us a ton of American flags on poles and we stood between the freako group and the church to keep the mourners from having to see their signs.

The WBC had six members show up, including what appeared to be about a 6 yr old boy. The signs they held up outside a Baptist Church during this funeral said “Thank God for Dead Soldiers”, “Your Pastor is a Whore”, “Divorce + Remarry = Adultery”, “Fag Church (with a stick figure bending over with another stick figure behind it), and the kid held up a sign saying “God Hates the USA”. I have to say that it would have been really hard to have been one of the police personnel who were having to make sure the WBC stayed in their little cordoned off area. I was really happy to see that the news coverage of the funeral did not show or mention the freako wacko group or our group. (BTW – they were in Houston to protest at Lakewood Church because apparently Joel Olsteen has the largest church in the world and has not used his pulpit to come out against homosexuality.)

I am unfortunately not shocked to hear that this sicko group is actually going to be at the Amish funerals. I thought about that yesterday, but figured that even they wouldn’t have enough nerve to show up. Apparently I was wrong. I don’t care what your religion is or if you even have one, I don’t care what your political beliefs are or if you even have any, and I don’t care if you consider yourself an American or hate everything it stands for – but you DON'T hold up these kinds of signs at a funeral. How these people can call themselves human is beyond me…

What I really wanted to know was how a link to a racist book on a racist website could explain the killings at the Amish school.

I thank you and your fellow riders for doing what you could to support the family of the fallen soldier. That's really impressive.

That WBC group is a disgrace to this country. I badly wish that we could send them somewhere else so they might gain some appreciation for what they do have.

I've got it. Send them to Afghanistan-although, I'm not sure who would suffer more. These idiots or the Taliban?
 
I agree with The Mutha 100%. I can't imagine the restraint it takes for any of mourners at funerals these idiots have protested at not to cause problems. I have been to many funerals where the next common emotion was anger, and having someone like Fred Phelps to take it out on would be too tempting.

It's a shame that the passive Amish have to undergo so many things against their grain because of an already tragic event.

well, I'm not saying gun control wouldn't help, but there are perhaps more stable populations in Europe in terms of racial tension, or gang related violence. If you break down the violence rate among socio economic lines, I wonder how that would work out? I know when salary and standard of living is broken down in such a way, it really changes the look of the statistics.

I'm not sure taking guns away from people that are seriously unbalanced will help. You have horrible sexually motivated crimes in europe as well as the US. Your average middle class killer is usually very motivated. Planning and all that went into this.

Gang violence, and drug related crimes, don't seem to require as much thought and planning. The whole motivation is different. I would say that decriminilizing drugs would be a better arguement for a reduction in violence in the US than stricted gun control. Didn't some guy in Scotland gun down children at a school? Hunting guns were common in Brussels, and there were even gun ranges where you could practice shooting. Hand guns, no one had one that I knew of! Even here where I live, no one owns a hand gun. But if you want to kill a moose, they have you covered!
 
I was really moved by a police spokesperson who said, "The Amish are valuable and well respected members of our community. They did not deserve this. Well, no one deserved this, but the Amish." And then he just cried.

France, along with most wealthy European countries, has plenty of immgiration, and plenty of racial tension, but much lower gun violence. Toronto's more ethnically diverse than Miami, but Miami has more shootings. Why? I dunno.

And, we treat Amish patients all the time, notably the traumas. And, they pay every single cent they are billed without argument. And, they never sue (i.e., they are the most grateful, pleasant peaceful, kind, understanding, not-trying-to-push-my-beliefs-on-you people you will ever meet.)

I'm absolutely devastated right now. I just got home and am still in a fog. No one should ever have to see an innocent six-year-old who never did anything to anyone with a gunshot in her head and her gray-matter sticking out.
