Amish School Shooting

What kind of person is not only too big a coward to kill himself (he left a suicide note), but attacks people who are pacifists?

Interesting that in this latest round of school shootings the talking heads on the news are always trying to analyze what motive these people have. Reminds me of that exchange from "Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb":

General Turdigson (reading the message from General Ripper who has sent B-52s off to bomb the USSR): "...'...God willing, we will prevail, in peace and freedom from fear, and in true health through the purity and essence of our natural...fluids'....Uh we're still trying to figure out the meaning of that last phrase sir."

President Muffley: "There's nothing to figure out, General Turdigson. This man is obviously a psychotic."

General Turdigson: "We-he-el, uh, I'd like to hold off judgement on a thing like that, sir, until all the facts are in."

The President's answer pretty well sums it up.

I don't think America is at the issue here. Guns are illegal here in the Netherlands, but many (young) people got them (but don't ask me for n umbers though  )

Also, if it wasn't a gun, it could be a knive, or chainsaw. It's the person that pulls the trigger who kills, not the bullit.

So, Americans are inherently more violent than others, regardless of what weapons they have available?

No more violent than Lucy at the children's hospital. You don't need a gun to kill, even though that is their sole purpose.

And yet, there are more killings in the US.

If it isn't the weapon, what other explanation is there?

How can they afford to, without insurance?

The entire community pitches in (e.g., just like when they build a barn). They do make money selling Amish goods to tourists, etc. And, it may take them a few years. But, they pay off their bill down to the last red cent.

There's perhaps a lesson to be learned there about what it truly means to be part of a community.

Culture, socio-economic conditions, class tensions, racial tensions, punish vs. rehabilitate, revolving door prison system, etc, etc, etc

There will be more killing in a country with a population of 300,000,000, as opposed to a country with 5,500,000.

Aye, one that could use a little more emulation, whether horse & buggy rigs come with it or not. :)

What an appalling tragedy for all concerned. Dr. Imago, I hope your patient pulls through; I can't imagine how distressing this must have been for you and your colleagues.

Apparently the killer was mad at god. http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/03/penn.shooter/index.html

So if god had only appologized, this never would have happened.

Mad at something that I'm sure he could not have ever supplied direct evidence to show existed in the first place.

Funny thing -- if I believed that someone was going to kill 6 year old girls execution style because he had issues with me, I would do something to try and stop it -- or at least warn the victims ahead of time. (You know ... given this all-powerful and all-knowing stuff.)

What was God so busy doing that He couldn't intervene?

Gee ... will anyone lose a touch of faith over this?

:boggled:

And if that's not enough, there will be those that will pray to this same god for healing that allowed this to transpire.
