Americans are the world's top consumers of cannabis and cocaine despite punitive US drug laws, according to an international study published in the online scientific magazine PLoS Medicine.

The study, released Monday, revealed that 16.2 percent of Americans had tried cocaine at least once, and 42.4 percent had used marijuana.

The research was conducted at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, based on World Health Organization data from 54,068 people in 17 countries.

I'm not sure how much stock I'd put into such a study, but I find it funny nonetheless. It's almost like the War on Drugs isn't working at all.

Ya, almost like that exactly!

Pot is literally a weed, it will grow almost anywhere. How the heck do you stop that?

Cocaine is really addictive, hence extremely expensive so how do you stop that?

The war on drugs is just so incredibly stupid it's not funny.

We're number one!! We're number one!!

... and New Zealand is #2.

Apparently. Not that I would know anything about it. Really.

Canada is way up there too, at least for cannabis-smoking

And do not the people of India smoke of bunch of ganga; did not the practice of toking come from an eastern culture?

+++

a very reliable source (Prof of Clinical and drug policy course) says americans use about 50% of the world's drug supply... wow; and her knowledge is very empirically-based; btw, she rocks!

Someone who I met (Swim) finds it hard to believe about the 50% usage; but Swim would not doubt it

Yea, is not cannabis considered an "invasive" plant?

Congrats you buncha potheads :)

All come brother man, so many of those people who enjoy and know the potentialities of the ganja deserve the "nomination" of stoner :D

Its not really news the US is the #1 consumer of drugs, both medicinal and recreational. This just reaffirms that.

What does surprise me is the number of people that have tried cocaine. Didn't think it was that high.

I'd just like to point out our politics, policies, population's beliefs and actions for the past few decades and then pose a simple question:

"Who would have guessed?"

This problem was solved at least 2 decades ago by allowing acronyms to be in ALL CAPS, where an acronym is just a word not in the dictionary, if it was typed in all caps by the writer.

As I've maintained for years; the "war on drugs" will be an exercise in futility unless there is a reduction in demand.
And not a soul I've listened to has even a glimmer of an idea on that.

That's a very disappointing report. :(

At least those statistics about cocaine and marijuana include one-time-only use of such drugs. Regular use must be lower. (Please let it be much lower!)

But I'd like more information about why people do this to themselves. The article mentions that single, wealthy, young men are more likely to be regular drug users than people in other categories. Is it because they have more of a sense of physical and legal invulnerability? Are they more socially-isolated? Are they less-deterred because they are less-often caught or prosecuted? Maybe understanding motives would help us fight this problem more effectively.

At least we in the U.S. smoke cigarettes less than many European countries and (among men) much less than Japan.

It's also kind of amazing that so many Americans would confess to such crimes when for decades now there has been such a heavy legal reaction here. This suggests to me that a lot of people here take the Drug War so unseriously they're not only willing to use drugs but to tell total strangers they do so!

Then shouldn't it be a LOT cheaper to buy? And I do a LOT of walking about in rural woodland/farmland and I've never seen any growing wild.. in spite of actively looking at times ;)

Old timers here in NC tell of the 'bad old days" pre WWII when the grass seed they bought to seed pastures came from Mexico and the producers used marijuana as "filler" seeds. They say the plant grew wild in every farm pasture in NC. Well, its gone now. So, as a weed its not too good at maintaining its presence.
