Al Sharpton Goes Ape Over NY Post Cartoon

The conceit was that the chimp was writing the stimulus bill. That was the connection. You may not think it's funny, but it's simply wrong to state that the cartoonist did not connect the chimp shooting and the stimulus bill on any level. It was the point of the cartoon.

My two cents: The cartoon was not intentionally racist. I doubt it was accidentally racist either.

Not racist and also not funny or smart. Where are all the good political cartoons?

The chimp was writing stimulus bill? Yeah, I got that. That's not a connection. That's just random association of unrelated events. How is anything that is represented in the meaning of the chimp incident, or chimps in general, related to the stimulus or the writing thereof? Not only do I not think it's a funny joke, I don't think it's even a joke at all.

Umm what is a connection except an association of events?

Sharpton didn't say it was a stupid cartoon, rather that it was a racist one.[/B]

Sharpton doesn't explicitly say the cartoon was racist (at least in his statement that you quoted in the OP). He said it was "at best troubling".

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Delonas drew this in an ambiguous fashion hoping to get a rise out of some people on the left. I assume you've seen his other cartoons; he has often drawn things that seem intended to shock and outrage liberals. Being a liberal myself, I would probably be more outraged by his cartoons if they were clever, but that is generally not the case.

Yup. There were plenty of cartoons that actually depicted or compared George Bush directly to a chimpanzee.

Yes but George Bush isn't a Black man.
There is a sad history of Black people being referred to as apes, sorry to point that out because I know how offensive that is.

Do you agree that Americans from African descent have - on the whole - the same ability to control their emotional processes as those from European descent? What purpose does the double standard serve?

White people are Vulcans?

Some of us. Others are Romulan - but I digress...

I'm just saying that the it has a different meaning for them argument -- IMHO -- casts groups of people as less capable to participate in the democratic process by virtue of their heritage.

To reiterate what was said before, the average reader of that cartoon is going to associate the stimulus package with Obama, not Pelosi . She may have been the principal author, and I ain't that big on it myself, but the cartoon was clearly aimed at Obama. That Delonas nitpicked about the wording of 'wrote vs. signed' is pretty irrelevant.

Ok, understandable, but why do you get to decide what people should/shouldn't be offended about? Do you think that many* White people aren't offended by certain words/phrases?

ETA: *Not all not even most (maybe) but many.

I didn't associate the chimp with Obama at all. The author seemed to be attacking the bill, not anyone in particular.

You didn't associate the chimp with Obama, but certainly, by now, you must recognize that some people did. Do you think, given his history, that Delonas could have foreseen this? Do you think he might have been trying to get a rise out of some people while leaving himself enough wiggle room to shake off the criticism? I can't read Delonas' mind, but, given his past cartoons, I wouldn't put it past him.

So what? Obama is the POTUS. He is a grown man that has to get used to the idea that he will be lampooned. He and his supporters have bigger things to be worried about beyond a stupid cartoon that doesn't even resemble Obama. You are all sounding like the the Muslims reacting to the cartoons in Denmark.

Sure. I'll even agree that we --as a society-- can agree that some of those mannerisms are in bad taste or condemnable. What I think should be the standard is a uniform nature to those mores. Lots of things in daily life offend me but I have to be a grown up and kind of power through it. I'm not excusing racist behavior - in fact, I'd be the first to confront it in most instances. I just ask for a level playing field - especially in political discourse where it is presumably our responsibility to become engaged.

Please.

I haven't suggested that any action of any sort should be taken regarding this cartoon. I've only suggested that Delonas might have been looking to get a rise out of people while carefully wording the cartoon in a way that makes charges of racism relatively easy to deflect. How is suggesting that Delonas might have been trying to stir a few people up (not violently, mind you) anything like the reactions by some Muslims to the Muhammad cartoons?

When Obama/chimp pictures get over 500,000 hits on google as Bush/Chimp pictures do then we can talk.
