Adolf Hitler wins election

Good for him. Hopefully most people will see him and respect him for who he is as a human being, and not treat his name as a novelty for their own amusement. Based on what's written in the article, it doesn't look like it'll be a problem for him in Namibia, so that's good anyway.

Day 1: A Namibian politician named after Adolf Hitler says he has no plans for world domination after winning a sweeping victory in local elections.

Day 2: Namibia invades Poland.

He's not fooling me.

To be fair, Poland was asking for it.

Is it white privilege when Anglophones sum up African politics as "haha look at his funny name!"? Or is it just colonialism?

Probably the same thing as when we laugh at the town of Fugging before they changed their name: asshatery.

I mean, I see the opportunities for humor here. But this isn't FC, or Humor. It's the Non-USA & General Politics forum. You'd think there'd be more for self-styled critical thinkers and all-around tolerant and inclusive progressives to say about African politics than "haha look at his funny name!"

You could ask to have the thread moved?

In determining whether the practice of making fun of odd foreign names is more immature humor, racism, or colonialism I will admit that I never considered the part of the forum it was posted in. In which it was posted. Now that I have taken that into consideration, I still feel like immature humor is in the lead.

I just thought it was noteworthy that someone called Adolf Hitler had been elected into office. If anybody wants to try to twist that into racism, then knock yourself out.

And I put it in the non-USA politics section, because it's a story about politics in a country other than the USA. If anybody wants to try to twist that into a charge of anti-intellectualism and discrimination then, again, feel free.

You are Neville Chamberlain and I claim my 5 pounds.

(Somewhat antiquated references there.)

Maybe. It might be worth wondering why he was named after Adolf Hitler. I mean, I agree with you that this may not be a “Lolz! Lookit the guy called Hitler! Funny because we associate Hitler with the mass murder of 6 million Jews and for this guy, his parents and the electorate that’s not a deal-breaker!”

I think it is patronizing to assume African politics should be above ridicule or criticism.

Either way, if someone was on a ballot with the name Adolf Hitler I am not voting for them. Even if they are black. To assume it’s okay because they are black or African is more of a problem in my opinion.

Why? Most people get the name they were given by their parents, why should you judge them as a person based on that?

I would never leave myself such a hostage to fortune. There are all kinds of politicians who turn out to be bad and whom we may regret voting for, but if you vote for someone called Adolf Hitler and then they turn out to be a racist, or a war monger or some other disreputable behaviour it will just sound silly saying, "I thought this Adolf Hitler would be different!"
