US Swing States Revealed a Nation Plagued by Misinformation

Most Trump voters I met had clear, well-articulated reasons for supporting him: he had lowered their taxes, appointed antiabortion judges, presided over a soaring stock market. These voters wielded their rationality as a shield: their goals were sound, and the President was achieving them, so didn’t it make sense to ignore the tweets, the controversies and the media frenzy?

But there was a darker strain. For every two people who offered a rational and informed reason for why they were supporting Biden or Trump, there was another–almost always a Trump supporter–who offered an explanation divorced from reality. You could call this persistent style of untethered reasoning “unlogic.” Unlogic is not ignorance or stupidity; it is reason distorted by suspicion and misinformation, an Orwellian state of mind that arranges itself around convenient fictions rather than established facts.

"Melting down" is a description that's been given to his tweet flurries on a bunch of occasions before. It is worse now, but people trying to describe how he keeps continuously getting worse ran out of new descriptions to show how much worse the current state is than before, a long time ago.

But it is interesting, although not as dramatic-sounding, how the type of craziness he's showing has just shifted recently. He's gone from telling stories and giving his idea of facts he wants people to believe, to telling people what they need to do for him.

He's probably also noticing how his support is wavering. The Trump supporters have gone quiet before, and now many of them seem to try to distance themselves from him, if this forum is anything to go by. There's also all the leaks and whatnot from the White House, and his illness which must make him feel even weaker. The relatively high number of Republicans who stated in polls that they disapproved of his corona handling is interesting, too.

I bet Trump's head would explode if someone pointed out to him that, according to Goldman-Sachs and Moody's, the reason that the stock market and jobs reports are up is because of anticipation that Biden will win.

Goldman Sachs wrote that a blue wave would "sharply raise the probability" of a fiscal stimulus package of at least $2 trillion shortly after the January 20 inauguration. The bank also cited Biden's longer-term spending plans on infrastructure, climate, health care and education.

Moody's Analytics found that Biden's economic proposals, if enacted, would create 7.4 million more jobs than would Trump's. The economy would return to full employment in the second half of 2022, nearly two years earlier than under Trump's plan, Moody's said.

Blow up the deficit? Nope, that was Reagan and GW Bush.

Start a war? Nope, that was GW.

Try to bankrupt the USPS? Nope, that was the GOP.

Pass a halfway decent health insurance bill? Yep, that was those awful Democrats.

Trash the ACA in every breath for the last 12 years without ever presenting a replacement plan: Nope, that was the GOP.​

I would imagine many, if not most, US citizens whose ancestors don't include many recent immigrants are descended from at least one slave owner.

Ancestorcrime is a real bad faith argument, especially given that the average Trump voter is drooling over the thought of of putting up more and more statues of heroes of the Failed War to Preserve Slavery.
 
Yeah but Biden's a liberal and has standards, Trump is.... *gestures* that and has none. So it makes perfect sense that Biden should pay for the crimes of his ancestors but Trump shouldn't /sarcasm.

And the Right doesn't understand the difference between "We need to address the continued systematic problem slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, etc are still causing" and "We need you personally to be punished for something a long dead white person did to a long dead black person" so to them "LOOKIT! LOOKIT! Your ancestor owned slaves!" really does read as a big "Gotcha" to them.

The see both "Address long standing racial issues" and "Simple, contextless White Guilt" as the same thing so it's not surprising they think fighting one with the other makes sense.
