Trump doesn't know how to course correct. That's too much like admitting he is wrong. Turning into the skid (or against the skid or however that metaphor works) is his only possible thought process.

I'm amused that Trump is still holding big rallies when it's his handling of COVID-19 that is dragging him down. The way he campaigns is what's hurting him. There are no undecided voters at those rallies yet he continues to hold them, reinforcing in the minds of pretty much everyone else that he's not the person to handle the virus.

IMO it's no longer a matter of campaigning to win the election - it's campaigning to win what comes after the election

A vociferous and motivated 40%, combined with compliant courts and supportive state legislatures can overturn any inconvenient election results and scare the enough of the 60% not to make too much of a fuss.

Of course it helps if that 40% contains a majority of police and military personnel.

I think you're wrong about this. I think the true loyalists with any power around Trump would be too spineless and incompetent to use the power they have, and when the election is called, they will not have the legitimacy either.

Whether there are some people in the military or the police who love him, the people pulling the strings have no reason to want to try and prop up that idiot. The only reason why they would do so now is because he literally is still the legitimate president of the United States. Once that's gone they will spend no time hesitating if he decides he's going to try to grip the Oval Office table with his puny hands.

They may not want to prop up President Trump per se but Trump's base is the key to the Presidency (I cannot envisage a Republican being elected in the foreseeable future without it turning out in forces) and to both the Senate and House.

If the GOP doesn't manage to get hundreds of thousands of postal votes, and tens of thousands of votes from minority districts excluded then they can wave goodbye to the Presidency, House and Senate. With the Democrats in charge it's likely that significant changes will be made to protect the right to vote at a federal level so there's a risk that they're saying goodbye to the House and Senate for a while.

They will fight tooth and nail to protect their power and, in state legislatures, stacked courts and SCOTUS they have the tools at their disposal to have a good go at pulling it off.

My fear is that if the Democrats win big in November they will do what they always do, immediately start acting as if they are going to be in power forever and start focusing on their pet projects and internal cause purity infighting rather then... like propping up democracy.

EC reform, gerrymandering reform, stateship for DC and Puerto Rico, voter suppression safeties being put into place... these are all nice ideas but when the Democrats are actually back in power and not fighting to get back in power I fear they will take a back seat, with maintaining the power they have being a "fiddle dee, problem for another day." The sense of urgency will be gone and the Dems are an easily distracted lot.

SCOTUS is a little more hazy because that will be an actual day problem that will have political repercussions they will have to deal with.

"Melting down" is a description that's been given to his tweet flurries on a bunch of occasions before. It is worse now, but people trying to describe how he keeps continuously getting worse ran out of new descriptions to show how much worse the current state is than before, a long time ago.

But it is interesting, although not as dramatic-sounding, how the type of craziness he's showing has just shifted recently. He's gone from telling stories and giving his idea of facts he wants people to believe, to telling people what they need to do for him.
