2018 US Senate Elections Thread

Some news out of West Virginia:

Senate Republicans are escalating their attacks on West Virginia Senate GOP candidate Don Blankenship, increasingly worried that the coal baron and ex-prisoner will blow a winnable race against Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin.

Don't know if he'll win the primary, but the GOP is concerned enough to spend their own money to defeat him.
Some more news on the Blankenship front:

Don Blankenship...has used an ethnic slur to refer to the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. In response to a series of attack ads that have been released against Blankenship by a Super Political Action Committee, Blankenship claimed that McConnell's wife — Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao — is the daughter of a "wealthy Chinaperson"

I guess as ethnic slurs go, "chinaperson" is probably relatively mild (are there any members of Asian heritage here who can weigh in on how derogatory it is?)

The article goes a bit further to point out Blankenship's hypocrisy... his own ties to China, an interview where he suggested he may move there, etc.

His statement on how great the Dictorial Regime in China is is really heartwarming.

The best summary of groupthink operating among the Tea Party.

By the way, the donkey is obviously white...

Looks like much ado about nothing to me.

Seems to me that some persons think that Chinese is primarily an adjective or a plural noun. They think saying, "She is a Chinese," seems wrong (and it sounds wrong to my ears, too). Chinaman has fallen long out of favor, for obvious reasons, and so he used "Chinaperson".

It's awkward as hell, but I don't see it as a slur. For what it's worth, in Cantonese, Americans are Meihgwokyahn (America person). That is, if their not just called gwai louh, roughly ghost person, if I recall, but a somewhat derogatory term for foreigners generally. Derived, of course, from the pale skin of Europeans.

And now what happened with that Neo Nazi getting the GOP nomination in Illinois looks likely to repeat itself on a larger scale in California:

Another embarrassment for the GOP which the Democrats will be sure that voters all over the country hear about.
Granted, California weird, non partisian primaries (the top two vote getters in the primary, regardless of party square off in November;in the 2016 Senate race the top two vote getters were both Democrats, so you had 2 Dems to choose from in November) might make it a bit easier to the GOP to distance themselves from him, since there is no "Official" GOP nominee, but still it's a huge embarrassment to the party. Once again, they should have talked some mainstream Republican to run for the nomination and take one for the team, , despite it being a lost cause in November. just avoid the big black eye coming.

So the R's should vote against him because he'll lose to the Dem, not because he's a complete loser. That fits.

Meanwhile, it's looking to me like Arizona may need to elect two senators this year.
