[Merged] Musk buys Twitter!/ Elon Musk puts Twitter deal on hold....

Could be a disaster, reinforcing/increasing the world of post-fact-reality. I hope not.

I'm less concerned about Rump's repeal of his Twitter ban. The news media is really where most of his publicity comes from and he gets that out anyway. For example his latest is calling Prince Harry under the thumb of Markle in the Piers Morgan interview. Rump does that specifically to get a news media response and sure enough, it did.

Rump claims he won't go back to Twitter if Musk allows it. I predict that stand won't last long.

But again, I think the worst is yet to come if Musk keeps to his assertion to make Twitter more free speech friendly. I take that to mean all false claims and CTs are welcome.

It's not like this is much of a change of pace. Most of these social media companies are run by silicon valley techno-libertarian ghouls.

I suppose there's a chance that Musk could make a real mess of it, but it's not like that would be any great loss. If his policies are obnoxious enough the service will become less popular, perhaps be supplanted by another.

Didn't Musk get into some kind of trouble for tweeting an inaccurate slur about a rescue diver helping recover kids? When he says "free-speech friendly," I think he means that he should have a platform to say whatever idiotic thing he wants without risk of getting booted. Remember his manipulation of the digital coin markets?

He's also gotten into trouble for making comments on twitter that ran afoul of insider trading regulations.

The odd part about this is that many of Musk's biggest problems in life come from the dumb things he says on Twitter.

He would be better off (and probably much more popular) if he stayed off Twitter altogether.

Instead, he bought it.:boggled::eek:

Isn't that how the rich usually make their problems go away?

Sure - but his problems were not with twitter itself. He would have been in trouble regardless of which platform he used to say things about stock prices or baseless accusations against people.

It just seems an odd choice. But he loves attention, and this gets him a ton more attention.

That Musk has become the darling of the far right should give pause to the liberals we have here who are also members of the Musk Personality Cult.
And we have a few...people whose politics if left of center but who still worhip Musk as a Missiah figure.

I predict yuge disappointment in MAGA Chud land.

Their hero who they slavishly and obsequiously adore, the over-rated and unfunny Elon Musk, will either attempt to get rid of ToSs altogether and make Twitter even more of a toxic cesspool than it is already and then have to bring some rules back to the forum to stop it completely driving away sane users… with the same MAGA chuds complaining that the feed is full of porn and crazy unhinged unChristian stuff.

OR…..

He won’t do much and will piss off all his disciples who thought it would be that grand Wilkilieaks exposure of 9/11 that never happened.

Then the conspiraloons who thought Elon was exposing the plot will turn out to be part of the plot.

He won the defamation case. He fought in a court of law for the right to call random people he doesn't like pedophiles with no evidence and won.
He argued that the 'pedo guy' tweet was meant to be an insult, not a statement of fact.

Interesting. I seem to recall Thunderf00t made a video recently claiming that Musk could not buy Twitter because he didn’t have enough money and this was just a PR stunt. I didn’t watch the whole video because frankly he was taking waaay too long to make whatever point or cite whatever evidence he was going to cite, and I just ran out of patience.

Here is what he said on twitter though:

To be fair, that was a pretty common opinion..given Musk's penchant for publicity stunts that lead to nothing.

I really hate this dumb narcissist.

I don't hate him, but I don'tlike the personality cult that he has going where he is God and can do no wrong.
A couple of people onthis forum are big fans of space travel...(and so am I) that they will forgive Musk anything because of Space X. I like what he has done with Space X, but that does not mean I cannot see his severe charecer flaws and all the mistakes he has made.
I won't name names about the forum members who will not speak ill of Musk because of Space X, but they should be smart enough to know better.

The progs are mad because they’re worried they won’t be able to cancel people on Twitter anymore.

They can always find a new home on TikTok I suppose.

The weird thing is, you could crack a joke: "Elon Musk buys Twitter... And nothing of value was lost", and everyone on both sides of the aisle would laugh and agree that it's funny because it's true. But absurdist politics demands that half the country lose their minds over this anyway.

The progs are mad because they’re worried they won’t be able to cancel people on Twitter anymore.

I think this is one of those delusions that right-wing Musk fans have that somehow Musk is going to make everything okay.

But what do we mean by "cancel on Twitter"?

If, for example, you mean there won't be any more dog-piling or ironic racist tweets going viral and resulting in someone getting sacked, then I don't see any evidence that Musk is going to stop that. In fact, probably the opposite if you can say what you like on Twitter.

Then what you’re saying is that the progs who are getting upset are delusional.

Sure they might be. It depends. Can you post someone’s words and I will tell you if they are correct or delusional. It is one of my powers.

Anyway, my point is that Musk will not be able to please everyone. Either he has ToS s or not. Either way will upset someone.

Honestly I don't think even the progs really know why they're mad about this.
Perhaps they aren't so much. It looks like it will be same- old, same old. Musk only wants it for a profit-making venture, not any particular political fire-hose. He will encourage / permit that which makes him richer. That's his lodestar.

Honestly I don't think even the progs really know why they're mad about this.

I'm not upset. it's a private company, and now all the pedophile misogynistic homophobic racist conservatives (I repeat myself) will happily out themselves while injecting bleach because God-Emperor Trump tweeted that they should do so.

OK.

Wait, are you sure?

So do free speech absolutists think it's no big deal that the loudest of the worst are given one of the largest media platforms in modern times, like Trump inciting the January 6 attack? That's a bit more than "cancelling" someone for a bad joke or what they said on social media one time that had to be dug up after a decade. But they've been made equivalent somehow thanks to right-wing propaganda.

Last thing we need is a greedy, narcissistic piece of **** like Elon Musk wanting to ingratiate himself with that crowd.
