High School Stabbings

It got very little, if any notice in US media. I usually key in to these ocurrences and your mention is the first I've heard of it.

In any case, I would guess it's going to be carried in the Canadian media for a while.

The funerals for some of the victims are tomorrow (Monday).

There are very few details that would explain the 'why'. The alleged perpetrator, Matthew deGrood, seemed to be a quiet but well liked and successful university student. He was invited to the party where the attacks took place.

Police are saying that drugs and alcohol were not a factor and there doesn't seemed to have been any sort of altercation before the attack, which suggests premeditation. The guy just went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and began stabbing. (Police report states that he brought an "instrument" with him to the party but that he used a knife found in the home).

Could this be an argument for knife security laws?

It's also been reported that deGrood sent text messages to his mother before the attack and those messages prompted the mother to contact the police. That and a Facebook post referencing some 'Megadeath' lyrics are the only clues released so far as to what might have been on the killers mind...

My pocket knife is very long and pointy. It looks a lot like this
[qimg]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61VK7vY0oKL._SY355_.jpg[/qimg]

The blade is 1/8th of an inch too short to require a concealed carry permit.
It is just a pocket knife mostly used to open envelopes, cut string, and slice apples.

I've had it for years and bought it from a local knife shop.

That is a nice knife. and very useful assuming it is as high quality as it looks.

Passed up a similar one a while back and have been kicking myself for it ever since.

And the problem is the knives that will be banned are not the type of knives that are used in crime. No one is buying a 200 dollar balisong, or spring assisted knife to commit crimes. Yet these are the types of weapons that come under fire.

And they do so because of the same reasons certain types of guns do, not because they are commonly used in crimes nor because they present a specific danger ( i mean come on we don't live in an rpg. A 200 dollar knife doesn't mean it is imbued with magical energy), but because they scare people and as such political points can be scored by loudly banning them.

There is just no logic in it, especially in the case of the balisong. If one wanted one to go out stabbing, they are very easy to make, but for someone who wants to collect, i don't want a prison shank, i want a high quality, good looking knife that won't break mid flip and send a handle into my face.
Just the reason that I have several Ken Onion folders with variant blade types - they open fast, lock very well and stay quite sharp
and you would need a big hammer to break them or even damage them some.. I want the bad guys to carry crap knives, crap pistols and oversize magazines so they can ride the fail train down to hell.

Well yes, in that sense it is rock solid logic, lol. And it shows, any times the cops arrest someone for a drug operation around here much attention is focused on finding illegal knives. Once I'm at my computer I'll try and link to the local article in which a math dealer wad found with a balisong and the cop goes on a giant rant about how scary a butterfly knife is.

Man had a gun, baton, pepper spray and a much better knife at his disposal, and a balisong scares him? Reeks of political motivation.
Or he actually fears something you have to play games with to open - and which, if of normal quality of same, will break apart on any decent knife blade or baton.

And that's just it, a Bali isn't a super weapon, it's a near little toy that had some functional uses.

During the time I was in the Boy Scouts and for a little while afterwards I carried a pocketknife pretty much everywhere (except where it wasn't allowed of course), waiting for that moment that all pocketknife aficionados say is inevitable where having one saves the day, or at least makes a task easier and more convenient. Sadly, it never came. No wait - I think I opened a few boxes at my first job with my knife; but then, work had utility knives expressly for that purpose, so my knife was really more superfluous than convenient. I eventually just stopped carrying it - one less thing to lose or bruise my hip if I fall on it I suppose. That moment still hasn't come.

But then, I've known one person who swears he uses his every single day, so it's definitely a YMMV thing I guess.

I'm usually messing around with something mechanical or electrical so 'yes' I do indeed use mine daily. Not having it with me would be the same as not having my keys or my lighter. Actually, I've worn out a few pocket knives to the point where they just kept falling apart.

Jeez, I've used my current knife already twice today and I haven't even gotten out of bed yet...:D

Yeah, I use my Gerber folder nearly every day, with multiple uses sometimes in a single day and I use my Gerber Flik multi-tool at least once a week if not more often as well. I don't consider my use to be anything special, but I guess it is.

Of course it's better to have a pocket knife and not need one than to need a pocket knife and not...oh never mind...

Some kind of acute psychosis?
If so, not the kind of thing that could be prevented or prepared for.

I can't find the link but there was a news article in the HuffPost.ca this morning where an anonymous source was claiming that the young Mr. deGrood has been under treatment for unspecified 'mental health issues' since his high school days.

It seems we might have reason here to require mental fitness/background checks before allowing anyone access to knives. Like Mr Obama says, "if it only saves just one life"...right???

Correction to post #193

The news article was a 'Calgary Herald' item, the link being found in the HuffPost.ca report.

"According to a health-care professional who also spoke on the condition of anonymity, de Grood was being treated for mental health issues dating back to his years as a high school student at St. Francis High School."

Yes this was the mantra I constantly heard growing up, and it's what led me to carry the thing all those years. For what it's worth, I later heard an extremely similar mantra about condoms. I don't carry one of those anymore either...

Next: Can openers, can you be trusted with manual versions or restricted to electrical? May Issue Permit required.

Zero tolerance for P-38's!
