Merged Ukraine erupts in riots and general strike.

Russia's retalliation looks increasingly like "they stuck back first" kind of thing. I do wonder if Putin knows he actually needs customers for his stuff. Or perhaps that he already lost more money than he can concievably gain from Crimea in a generation or so. Any such "retalliations" will just cost him more.

Oh, and don't count on Chinese to help you out. They need strong dollar, and have spent copius amounts of money to prop it up over the past fifteen years or so. Guess who'll feel the most pain from such 'retalliations'?

the desperate despot putin might have grabbed some one else's dirt but is going to pay a massive price for it, Russia's economy is a basket case reliant largely on fossil fuel sales, a commodity they do not have a monopoly over.

I am still curious as to why left leaning people would want to support such a despot as Putin it is a genuine mystery.
USA = Root of all Evil in the universe
Anyone opposing the USA = Good

Some people can't handle complexity well.

I am left leaning politically but can see the desperate despot putin's acts as exactly what the are, an illegal seizure of some one else's land, the standard deflection technique of a tyrant losing control or fearing they will lose control, there are a lot of fracture lines in Russia, massive corruption, repression of civil and human rights, an economy based in the shifting sands of fossil fuel prices, a slide in the standard of living for the majority.

I suspect most people who define themselves as left leaning politically and support Putin aren't really left leaning, but just stupid angry people who hate the west for being better than others at so many things. You aren't one of them, which is a good thing :)

What is this, the "dullest stereotype" competition? Take it to Humour.

Anyone still following the events? Regional administration buildings in Charkow and Donezk occupied. Russian flags flying. Police is not following orders from the putschists.

I love how some people here, a certain sub-set, have almost nothing to say that isn't about "some people" and follow each other around with sad little high-fives over it lol

ETA: special request - no high-fives over this post. :)

They're sending all they got - themselves:

BBC said:
Officials said Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council Secretary Andriy Parubiy and Security Service chief Valentyn Nalyvaychenko have been sent to the city.

Interior Minister Arsen Avakov had already arrived in Kharkiv, and First Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Yarema is on his way to Donetsk, a spokeswoman said.

;)

And welcome to another round of "we report what our guys say verbatim and ignore everything else" courtesy of the pre$$titudes of BBC et al (the SPIEGEL article I read is even worse).

One of the saddest things in all this for me is some on the left being cheerleaders for a tyrant.

Here's the "president"'s statement. It's all a conspiracy of course, like our local CTers certainly agree. Can't have anything to with the fact that almost nobody in the East, including but not only Yanukovic's voting base, accepts those putschist clowns. That would be crazy talk.

El Presidente said:
Taking into consideration the passive behavior of some local law enforcement bodies, they will be strengthened with subdivisions from other regions.

Translation: We'll send our thugs in now. Oh wait, they just stormed our supreme court...

So Russia having operatives in their neighboring country that is getting too close to the West for Russia's comfort, is a "conspiracy." But US/EU/Zionists being in bed with Neo-Nazis in Kiev, is just a "simple fact."

I think you need a better BS detector. I think yours has broken.

I think you should at least learn the difference between "conspiracy" and "conspiracy theory" before you even try to be witty on topics you don't have the simplest clue about. :nope:

If they were sincere, they could just wait for the the election in May, and then abide by wishes of the then-legitimate government.

Whether Russia has a hand in these protests or not, they look as if they do.
