Merged Fred Phelps nearly dead/Is dead.

Just heard the good news. Ding Dong, Fred Phelps is dead! The world is indeed a far better place. Now, if only the rest of the adults in the congregation would follow suit.

I'm trying to think of something appropriate for an atheist group to do for/at any services for Phelps... ??
But I keep coming to the conclusion that as we know there is nothing left after death, all any observance there might do is to pity the guy's wasted life and mention the hate he fostered lives on after him.

How about befriending the kids who escaped, at some level? Or at least thinking kind thoughts about them? That's addressing the real world here-and-now in a positive manner, so that's where I am. I would like to someday shake Nate's hand and thank him for escaping and for sharing his story with the world.

But if they put Fred in teh ground I'm gonna take a dump on him before I die.

Is it possible, Janadele, for any christian to be a truly bad person? Do you have it in you to condemn any christian for their actions or words?

The hatred demonstrated by many on this forum towards genuine Christians and those who stand for true Christian morality is blatant evidence that few if any have any qualifications nor right to judge or condemn Fred Phelps.

You are not a xtian, Janadelle. Christ spoke for love, but you speak for hate.

Personally, I would be happy to be friends with any genuine xtian who didn't propound the spiritual blackmail of hell.

It's only you that I disapprove of, and not because you are a Mormon, but because of the horrible things I've seen you say in various threads.

Phelps was a sadistic brute clothing himself in religion to disguise his truly vile character. He was in the habit of repeatedly slapping the face of his babies in church to shut them up. His wife managed to get him to agree to wait until they were 1 year old before doing it, after the members of the church they were attending were appalled to see him doing it during a service to his first son who was only 5 months old. (This was before they started the Westboro church).

His son Mark's personal testimony surely trumps any other reportage (and there is documented evidence to back up the reports, such as photographs and legal records): he nearly killed Mark's brother Nate with a heavy wooden handle, after 200 home run hits with full body power swings. https://blank.org/addict/chapter2.html It was a regular torture he imposed on his children, even when just infants.

He should have been jailed many years ago. It's an indictment of the moral health of America that simply calling it a church was sufficient to deflect attention from the systematic abuse he ruled over in his little fiefdom.

Amen.

Oh Janadele - Freddy boy didn't just hate fags (just like you), he also hated Mormons.

On February 2, 2008, the group picketed during the funeral of former LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley in Salt Lake City, Utah, displaying picket signs accusing him of being a "lying false prophet" and "leading millions of people astray".[52] The organization also criticized Hinckley for being too accepting of gay people, accusing him of having an ambiguous voice about homosexuality rather than taking a firm stand against it.[53] Police had difficulty determining whether the demonstration met the guidelines of protected free speech.

If I had the stomach to wade through Fred Phelps past, considering his hard line Fundy Christian beliefs, I would bet that the LDS was among the many things he hated.
Oh yes.

I thought it was 'wicked', at least that's what HP sang when Carly was ousted.

You'll happily excoriate homosexuals for who they get into bed with, but you just crawled into bed with Fred Phelps.
Thats not an image I wanted. :(

So for those keeping score: the Phelps clan disrupting a funeral to shout at the bereaved about why their deceased loved ones are burning in hell is protected free speech and should be tolerated by society, but people on an internet forum pointing out demonstrable factual errors in LDS doctrine and in Janadele's own claims is anti-Mormon propaganda at best or personal attacks at worst, and shouldn't be allowed if the forum were run fairly.
Now you understand.

Careful - God hates gags, you know.
:D

Just as an exercise in time-wasting...

The list of things hated by Phelps and the WBC was quite long, and by no means limited to Mormons and fags (to say nothing about gay Mormons).

I was trying to think of something that is NOT hated by the WBC. Any ideas?

Puppies? Does God hate fag-enabling puppies?
Sunsets?
Raindrops on roses? (Oh wait, that sounds a little gay)

Your attitude doesn't surprise me in the least given your history of bigoted, judgmental posts in various threads. Fred Phelps typifies the agenda of hate by the Christian right towards those who don’t conform to their own warped worldview - you included. The only thing to be said in Phelps’s favor is that he was straight-forward in proclaiming his despicable views instead of dissembling them like most Conservative Christians do. No wonder many Conservative Christians disowned him, he blew their cover.

Good point that.

On the other hand, even conservative xtians can just be ordinary nice people. The article I linked to above describes how Westboro got started with 50 members of the congregation of the church the young Fred and wife had started attending when they had moved to the area. (That church was where he was slapping young baby Nate, and several of the men confronted him over it after the service finished. That's how his wife managed to convince him to wait until the babies were 1 year old before slapping their heads around!)

Being a forceful and sort of charismatic young fervent preacher, he managed to get appointed to be the preacher's back up, or deputy or something. After a little while they decided to give him his own church and set up the Westboro branch with 50 from the original congregation attending to get them started. It didn't take long, just a few weeks if I remember correctly, for Phelps to alienate and outrage them all, so they'd all deserted him and gone back to their original congregation.

So even conservative xtians found him abhorrent, in fact, for genuine human reasons.

But it's still a good point: he did expose the fruits of that sort of bigotry for all to see.

We are not even sure if he did not hate himself...

I do not judge Fred Phelps, I do not know him, nor do I trust much of the media.
Janadele,

This has nothing whatsoever to do with "trusting the media". You don't need to "trust the media" at all. You can just go to Fred Phelps' own websites, and check out his hatred for yourself. www.godhatesfags.com has plenty of videos of Fred Phelps giving sermons that are full of vile hatred, essentially saying that God not only hates homosexuals, but every single human being who is not a member of his church. Even better, go to www.godhatestheworld.com, where Fred went the extra mile to explain why God hates every single nation on the planet. One of my favorites is his comment on why God hates Pakistan:
Although Pakistan made sodomy illegal in the 90s they do not institute Gods standard of the death penalty (Lev. 20:13 & Rom. 1:32). This is yet another instance where the Pakistani government substitutes their base judgment for Gods perfect judgment.
Yes...he states that the reason God hates Pakistan is that although they made homosexuality illegal, they won't murder all the homosexuals.

This isn't media. This isn't exaggeration. This is Fred's own words, on his own websites, and in his own videos. These were things that he was proud of.

Honestly, to me, you sound like those who said nothing while the Nazis were imprisoning and killing everyone they didn't like. "It's not my place to judge him, and besides, I can't personally be sure what is true, or what is not." Personally, I think that the LDS is completely wrong...but then, I think that of every religion. However, I still respect those religious people who take a stand against acts of evil and hatred.

On the other hand, those who excuse or ignore such things...I have no difficulty whatsoever in judging them as worthless, and one of the main reasons why such evil continues to thrive.

Phelps will rise again. As a zombie he will be carrying a sign that says "God hates Brains!"

Are you saying the base nature of Fred Phelps is to insist the thing he most craves is the thing God Hates?
