I had to wait a year but that was because my wife was pregnant at the time. I don't think the Church means to be cruel they are just arrogantly and thoughtlessly cruel. Could you imagine if the Catholic Church had a policy that non-Catholics couldn't witness the ceremony. Then again, the Catholic Church isn't the true Church is it. It's amazing the BS one can justify if one is convinced that their belief is righteous. When I got married in the los Angeles Temple of course, only those with a temple recommend could witness the ceremony.
We had a civil ceremony first, but had no problem inviting whomever we wished.
Is this "wait a year" something new?
Let's face it, the "We're Special" component is a feature of any serious, exclusive club. Human beings love that stuff.
That policy is one of the worst and dumbest of the Mormon Church. That and no freedom of conscience. And to the apologists, I'm sorry, freedom of conscience is not possible without the freedom to speak one's mind. The Soviet Dissident, Natan Sharansky, documents that fact well in The Case For Democracy. Backbiting or speaking ill of leaders is an important feature of any healthy society. Had Brigham Young not ruled with such an iron fist and closed mouths he might not gotten away with his ugly and racist remarks.
