This comment almost blew up my irony meter twice...
Abbott praised Perry for keeping "Washington in check, working to block an intrusive federal government from meddling in our personal lives

Well, I guess it is about blocking the FEDERAL government from meddling in our personal lives...the state government, otoh?

Actually, I'd almost call Poe. No one can be this completely oblivious, can they?

Well, If they had the votes, I have no doubt they would have no qualms about taking their religious agenda to the federal meddling level.

My question is, who replaces him?

Is there someone in the Texas GOP even more of a political Neanderthal than Perry?

Maybe he really wants to pursue his life long dream of singing in a boy band?

You're kidding, right? We're talking the Texas GOP. In Texas, you can't swing a dead cat around by the tail without knocking over at least six candidates who make Perry look like Trotsky.

Would someone PLEASE nominate Ron Paul for the position? Never mind Texas seceding from the US, if Paul is governor, Austin will secede from Texas!

Perry not to run again!

And as a good-bye gift, a memory of one of his classier moments:
Rick Perry's on-camera mo-fo

State Attorney General Greg Abbott is pretty much considered the Republican front-runner.

I think some lady named Wendy could be the next governor of Texas.
From your mouth to God's ear...oh, wait...:boxedin:

Hot Damn!!!

I am currently the loser in the on-going "My Governor is Stupider than Your Governor" contest with my friend in Texas.

When I had Sarah Palin, I was a contender. When she bailed, my fortunes sank.
Now that Perry is leaving, I have another chance at the title - I still have Parnell and Texans are going to be hard pressed to fill in with a contestent of Perry's caliber.

Nice list of grievances against our not so beloved Governor:

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2013/07/08/2266881/miss-rick-perry/

some highlights...

1. He allowed Texas to become the nation’s worst polluter. Texas under Perry has led the nation in carbon dioxide emissions and is home to five of the ten worst mercury emitting power plants in the country. Rather than try to do something about this, Perry sued the federal government to try to avoid complying an EPA ruling that the state was in violation of the Clean Air Act. A proud climate change denier, Perry called the 2010 BP oil spill an “act of God” while speaking at a trade association funded by BP. And his solution to the nation’s economic ills in 2011: more oil drilling.

3. He actively sought to dismantle Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Perry argued that Texas and other states should be able to opt out of federal entitlements like Medicaid and Social Security — even though such a move would actually cost his own state’s economy billions of dollars. Despite their popularity and success, he called these programs and Medicare “Ponzi schemes,” and suggested they are actually unconstitutional.

4. He consistently backed legislation to restrict women’s reproductive rights. Perry has made news in recent weeks for his embarrassing attacks on State Senator Wendy Davis (D) and his efforts to ram through a likely unconstitutional bill to shut down the vast majority of Texas clinics that provide abortion. But his attacks on women’s reproductive choice are nothing new; in 2011 he pushed for and signed “emergency legislation” to require women to have unnecessary sonograms prior to abortions.

Running for President? V.P.?

Yes, running for president. Today was the first in a series of headline-grabbing announcements to that effect. Over the next year and a half, he'll make other moves that get attention and are gradually more explicit about his intentions, leading up to his official announcement.

Watch for how soon he pops up in Iowa.

I find it hard to believe. If he's got a solid "kitchen cabinet" they'll point at Rubio, Cruz, Christie, et. al. and say, "Let's go fishing."

I find it incredulous, frankly. I know he's a bit of a dim bulb but anyone with an IQ above human body temperature has but to look at the major crash his popularity did in the 2012 primaries and realize that he suffers from GOP-itosis. That's the disease that gives you 47% popularity figures for two full weeks as long as you stay indoors and don't talk to anyone. As soon as you step out into daylight or in front of a microphone, that number drops to the low 20s.

Did he not keep video tapes of last year?

He was Dubya's Lt. Governor. And his main purpose seemed to be to make Bush look smart.

Think about that a moment.

Did he not keep video tapes of last year?

He tried, but couldn't find any VHS tapes to record on.
