Rick Perry to not run again

Yes, running for president. Today was the first in a series of headline-grabbing announcements to that effect. Over the next year and a half, he'll make other moves that get attention and are gradually more explicit about his intentions, leading up to his official announcement.

Watch for how soon he pops up in Iowa.

Think this time he will remember which federal agencies he wants to close?

He won't likely make that particular mistake. But there are so many ways to pratfall. I like how he's claiming that medication from his back surgery caused that flub.

Here's what I think caused that flub: Perry and his ilk like to run around enumerating all the government agencies they'll close. (By the way, he was naming cabinet departments, not agencies, so there's that.) Typically, they haven't bothered to work out the details of how the functions performed by that department would be carried on. Perry was campaigning in eliminating Depts of Commerce, Education and ... what was it again ... Energy. Why couldn't he remember Dept of Energy? Because he hadn't given two seconds of thought as to why he would eliminate the Dept of Energy (or the other 2) and how which of their functions would be eliminated entirely or transferred to other areas of government. It's policy by jingoism. It's very shallow, and thus easily forgotten, even by its proponents.

Who the heck is advising him that running for president is a good idea?

Maybe he realized that he almost had the nomination last time. All he has to do is speak clearly, remember his positions and not suck all ass at pretending to be human.

Almost had the nomination? I guess being the flavor of the week counts for something.

Yeah, he almost had the nomination...for about a week, until he flew the plane straight into the mountain.

I think this is more about the fact that the presidential run exposed him as a true idiot.

In the last state election he refused to debate Kay Bailey Hutchison. I know this sounds idiotic, but it was actually brilliant, any debate would have shown that she was the far better candidate. In other words, he has been governor for so long because he has kept his head down. For years he was just governor good hair. That was ll we knew about him because he was nothing more than a nice hairdo over a leathery smile. Really.

Now that more Texans have heard from him, I don't think he can win another race in Texas against a strong candidate. In fact, I would be that he has been in the news more since he ran for president than the entire rest of his years in public office.

It sounds odd, but I think he is more marketable on the national stage than he is on the local stage. A bit like Palin, but with a touch less quit in him.

Regulating nuclear reactors is exactly the kind of excessive regulations that are destroying this country!

This comment almost blew up my irony meter twice...

The democrats need to find a way to quantify the amount of money the State has spent suing the federal government. Abbot has essentially said that his job is to sue the federal government and I think we as a state have little to show for this effort beyond large legal bills.

Who the heck is advising him that running for president is a good idea?

Those who think that people are so stupid that he can run on the "get the government out of our personal lives" platform.

Sadly, they aren't all wrong.

I expect that Perry will follow the Palin model whereby:

First, Perry will write some sort of conservative book. Well, actually he will hire someone to write the book for him, however Perry will take credit for the book all the same.
Second, Perry will go on a national book to support the book. Which will is basically a working and very well paid vacation.
Third, Perry will take a job as a Fox News host/consultant/commentor. Which will be very easy work, but very well paid work.
Fourth, Perry will periodically go on lecture tours. Which again, are basically working and very well paid vacations.

In other words, Perry will cash in big time.

Would someone PLEASE nominate Ron Paul for the position? Never mind Texas seceding from the US, if Paul is governor, Austin will secede from Texas!

It would be like West Berlin back in the day. We'd have to arrange airlifts of microbrews, organic produce, and skinny jeans.

Not to mention building nuclear bombs. Perhaps our well-coiffed once and future candidate didn't know that.

Who the heck is advising him that running for president is a good idea?

His own ego and arrogance.

p.s. On a personal note, I wish people would quit acting like Austin is the one bastion of sanity in the state. San Antonio is moving up. It's not Austin's mayor that's working to turn the state blue (or at least purple), or was invited to make the keynote address at the Democratic national convention, or is being mentioned as a possible candidate for statewide or national office. Besides, San Antonio has the Riverwalk and Fiesta. :D

I'm going to miss him. What he lacks in intellect he more than made up for with corruption.

Now we'll get Greg Abbot, who is Rick Perry without the compassion and charm.

True.

Now we'll get Greg Abbot, who is Rick Perry without the compassion and charm.

I don't know that Abbot is electable. He seems very abrasive and would not do well with people who aren't completely in his corner. Not everyone thinks that suing the federal government is the main job of the state government.
