These people heard words in flaccon's recordings:

1 Quinn (after using his imagination)

The the interest of accuracy and making sure I don't become the guy who lets flacon say "Even some people on the JREF site heard the voices!", I would like to clarify that I said I heard "bits that I could make myself believe sounded like speech." I then had a bit of fun trying to find words I could make my brain believe they bore passing resemblance to. I did not hear actual words, unless you put the word "hear" in very big quotation marks (as I did in my earlier post). So for the purposes of this informal poll, I would amend the stats to:

Pareidolia would still be the most likely explanation, even if you did hear something that sounded like a voice. Hearing the same (or similar) words to those flaccon claimed to hear would also not rule out pareidolia, as something that sounds like particular words to one person will sound similar to anyone else.

Not necesarily.
Years back there was a late-night tele production in Spain that had a segment dedicated to Spanish 'lyrics' found in foreign songs.
Most intriguing and amusing.
And a bit creepy.

I wonder if a mod could edit the OP to add the final list of JREF posters who didn't hear voices. That way, if flaccon sends people here saying "People at the JREF heard it too!" the opening post will say that we didn't hear them, and readers won't have to wade through the entire thread to find out who did or didn't hear voices.

"Wimbledon" file: "Apple juice"

In the Wimbledon file, the supposed "Wimbledon" sound is in the third second.
When I amplify and slow down the sound in Audacity, no "wimbledon" is audible to me. What I can 'hear' are the sounds of: "temperature", "estrogen" and "applejuice".

When amplified and slowed down, for me, "apple juice" is the clear winner. "Wimbledon" doesn't even remotely fit.
The other files sound like garbled noise to me.

I must add though, the sounds I hear are not distinct words.

The audio component in a WMV file is lossy and highly compressed. floccan's method for recording an audio file is to record as WMV while covering the webcam lens with a bit of cardboard.

The following question is not answered earlier in the thread, I believe: Why specifically does flaccon choose to use her laptop's video recording capability to record just sound instead of simply her laptop's audio recording capability.

I infer that she uses the webcam application simply because its poor quality is necessary to let her hear 'voices'.

A higher quality recording method would not contain all the noise and distortion artefacts which she imagines to be speech. Simple as that.

I infer the exact same thing, but I was wondering how flaccon rationalizes her choice.

I can't speak for her, but I think it's because her webcam is a) easy and b) outputs these awesome warbly "spirit" files.

Because she has no idea what she's doing.

What about "Ladybrook"? ;)

Because she has no idea what she's doing.

That can't be true: All of the entangled frequencies have been copiously calibrated. Not to mention apostro'phiz'ed et' al. :eye-poppi

In flaccon's defense, she has been willing to listen to much skeptical discussion about pareidolia and technical info on sound recording. We need to find better ways to help her understand what's being said to her--said by us, I mean, rather than by the "spirits", whose inaudible ramblings she deciphers with reckless ease.
