I'm expecting flaccon not to return to the forum so she doesn't have to read all the corrections to her final "9 out of 10 people hear what I hear" sign off statement.

Noise and low quality digital recording artefacts only. No voices. There are no words in those recordings.

Just to keep the list straight.

Looks like flaccon's free way with apostophes is catching ;)

I felt obligated to look up the rules. I had no idea I was so ignorant. The rules were not taught properly to me, or I was looking out the window at the time.

The rules are too complicated for most people. As long as there is no misunderstanding, I am not going to double-check. I will concede to making an effort.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophe
Over the years, the use of apostrophes has been criticized. George Bernard Shaw called them "uncouth bacilli". In his book American Speech, linguist Steven Byington stated of the apostrophe that "the language would be none the worse for its abolition."…

…Peter Buck, guitarist of R.E.M. claimed, "We all hate apostrophes. There's never been a good rock album that's had an apostrophe in the title."

Thanks, Stray Cat.
I notice they are not just audio files but movie files (.wmv)
I'll look and listen later.

I uploaded these files exactly as floccan gave me them. An earlier attempt in the thread to do this had failed because flaccon complained that the voices had been lost in the 'file transfer process'.

flaccon confirmed that the files she copied to my memory stick were identical to those on her computer and I confirm as far as I can tell that the files in Box.com sound identical to those I heard at flaccon's house.

The audio component in a WMV file is lossy and highly compressed. floccan's method for recording an audio file is to record as WMV while covering the webcam lens with a bit of cardboard.

There is more detail about the above way back in the thread, Daylightstar, if you have the patience to search for it.

The apostrophe is a noble beast that adds to clarity of thought and expression, and aids in unambiguous communication.

Since we insist on contractions, it's necessary to use it in good English traditional exception-to-the-rule fashion as in this sentence, where its use is illustrated as making clear where we are contracting two words into one, and so the possessive word "its" becomes necessary to show when a contraction is not intended during the use of the sound in a possessive context. You might argue that context would provide the correct interpretation, as is the case in speaking aloud... but written English is not the same as speaking, and so in reading the visual clue can aid in recognition of its true intention at point of reading.

If it's "its" that's causing you conniptions, it's not its' fault, okay!?

(Of course, now I fall afoul of not knowing whether it should be "its's" or "its'", since "s'" is the form for the possessive applied to a plural, as in "the apples' basket", and "its" is not a plural, so possibly "its's" is more appropriate... there again, if Jones owns a bone, is it Jones's bone, or is it Jones' bone? Or if it's a family heirloom, is it the Jones' bone? I'd say it's the Jones' bone, but its Jones's bone when he's alone.)

:crowded: :jaw-dropp:eye-poppi:eek::rolleyes:

:p

PS I wonder how long before this post gets removed by the mods for being off topic.

Is this a challenge?

Digital Dreamdoor's 100 Greatest Rock Albums puts Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at No1, and Hard Day's Night is there as well. If you don't rate the Beatles they also list Prince Sign o' the Times and the Stones with two apostrophies It's Only Rock n' Roll.

Derail over. I'll behave

What about Frank Zappa's Apostrophe? Huh? It's a whole bloody album name!

It's especially relevant here as it features Cosmic Debris, which pops into my head more often as a result of the woos visiting the forum than anything else. ("Look here brother/ who you jivin' with that cosmic debris?")

Tongue in cheek challenge.:D Thought I would see who would rise to the bait. Jond - love Zappa!

Alderbank - I am your side, and I don't think you overreacted. I think you are dealing with this correctly - which is backing off, and being conciliatory irrespective of what might have occurred. Let it die off.

This has been an interesting thread in many ways.

I get the impression that there is almost a missionary zeal to help flaccon “see the light”. I am told I am not helping with my comments, and am told that my comments have no relevance and belong in another thread. Yet flaccon is the one mentioning “dark forces”. When I ask for an elaboration I am told that I am somehow “encouraging her” in her mistaken belief that there is a supernatural. Why? What are her beliefs? Does she believe in a God? If so which God? Does she believe in supernatural forces (good and bad)? If so, what does she do to protect herself from the dark forces? Does she go to church? Does she have a pastor/minister/priest who will help her? Why go to the Bishop?

I think that pareidolia is the likely answer, but there is a possibility that she does hear voices. If so, she needs professional help. Her friends and family may just be humouring her. She may indeed be “scary” at times although she insists she has a “polite sounding voice”. I do not understand her need to call Alderbank’s house. What have I missed? I also ask why she asked for “Alderbank”?

To flaccon:
I am going to assume you believe in good and bad spirits – if so then you will understand when I say that believers in the supernatural say that you can invite them in by ignorance or accident, or deliberately in order to gain “power” or notoriety. If you have done the latter, then you will bear the consequences until you decide to seek change.

Put aside whether demons exist or not. A “cleansing” of the house, computer and yourself by someone qualified to do such things would be “insurance”. If you believe in such things then such advice is well-intentioned, and could turn out to be beneficial. The problem is finding a genuinely good person who has a good track record.

The decision in in your hands - accept you have pareidolia, or go to a mental health practitioner, or go to your local priest, or all of these options. Or carry on regardless.

You are right. I will try harder.

This has been coming up as some humor in this thread and without it things get a bit heavy at times.

For the last time, one doesn't "have" pareidolia.

And there you go again encouraging her to believe in this "dark forces" nonsense. There is no reason to support this drivel. No one in the world is "qualified" to "cleanse" houses, people and computers of "dark forces". Come on, man...

I wouldn't put it that way, but I would certainly admit to being eager to encourage anyone who believes they have a paranormal ability to test it objectively.

Of course I fully expect the results of such a test will always be that they don't really have any paranormal ability and have been unwittingly fooling themselves, but if someone did turn out to be able to do something for which we have no mundane explanation, then I really want the world to know about it.

Imagine what a tragic loss it would be if there really was someone with a paranormal ability, but it was never taken seriously because they never bothered to test it.
