He's been charged with murder.

Looks like the accidental-shooting angle was just media speculation when reports first came out.

So now everyone will stop trying to turn this crime into spin for their side of the gun argument, right?

.... Right?

*sigh* :(

I'm not sure how "accidentally shot his girlfriend because he thought she was a burglar" changing to "he shot her intentionally because he was fighting with her and had the gun handy" really affects the point against guns?

Wouldn't either scenario be a ding against the gun enthusiasts?

Of course not! A deliberate murder in South Africa speaks volumes about United States gun control. Somehow.

Right. Because everything changes regarding human nature and lethal weapons once you cross the geographic boundaries of arbitrary borders established hundreds of years ago.

Not sure he's suggesting the speech should be made from an open balcony under a spotlight. :D

:D From where then? Maybe you have a hiding place and you make the speech into a mike and it booms round the whole house, but then the girlfriend killer starts blazing randomly in all directions, killing the parrot, smashing the fish tank etc. Better to zap her him without preliminaries.

Well...some would say it would when you consider cultures. I mean an individual's actions is reflective to their culture and that includes dispositions to violence (not always positive though ie counterculture).

Behaviour is weird even within one country: The USA is a great example of heterogenous cultures. It's why we're considered one of the very few "high risk high coping capacity" countries in the world.

If they had the NRA in South Africa, it's safe to say he would have been one of the good guys with guns.

Maybe he should run for NRA president in South Africa? I mean he has no shoes to fill there and all...

THE MAN HAS NO LEGS! (it's my g-d birthday I'm MAKING these jokes with no regard for taste or humor)

I'd been assuming the mistaken for an intruder story was true, but reading this...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-21459240
"Police [...] found paramedics treating a 29-year-old woman with four gunshot wounds to the head and upper body."

and

"Police say neighbours heard screaming and shouting around the time of the shooting, and that they had been called to investigate incidents of a domestic nature at the same house in the past."
...makes me wonder.

It certainly gives a whole new meaning to taking your girlfriend out for Valentine's Day.

I heard that the two shots were seperated by the time it took him to do a lap around the bedroom. Don't believe it myself though.

I'm not surprised.
Anyone who watched the Olympics could see this guy was always going round the bend.

Playing an armchair Quincy, the fact that she was shot in the hand and head, and shot four times, suggests to me this wasn't an accident. Aren't shots to the hand common where someone reflexively puts their hand up to defend against a gun pointed at their head?

If that's the case then they could presumably see each other well enough. And four shots! That seems too many to be an accident.

Perhaps I am just stating the obvious.

Because it's legal to shoot an intruder in your home in the U.S., so if he really believed she was an intruder, then it was an accidental shooting and not a murder.

It's still a good idea to confirm your target and to give them the chance for surrender if they really are an intruder. However:

But apparently he just murdered her, so it's a moot argument.

This.
