Handguns are by far the most common weapon used for homicide and other crimes involving firearms. From a public policy standpoint, making it more costly and difficult for criminals to obtain handguns is where our efforts should be focused.
Firearms manufacturers have a different perspective. Only a small part of the population are active hunters. Hunting rifles and shotguns don't get used very often and typically outlast their owners. But if you can convince people that they need to pack a handgun at all times for personal safety, you can sell a lot more guns.
