Heard any good rape jokes lately?

So this comedian (Daniel Tosh) was telling rape jokes when he was heckled by an audience member and he joked that "wouldn't it be funny if this woman was raped?". If you are like me you are wondering how does one know when it is appropriate to joke about otherwise terrible things. So far all I've come up with is "be funny". But doesn't that beg the question?

Daniel Tosh, Rape Jokes and Hecklers

So, what do you think?

*I did a search on the forum for Rape and didn't find a thread on this subject. Sorry if it is duplicated.

Shockingly enough, yes. I actually have heard a good rape joke recently. And for the first time.

Daniel Tosh's "joke"? I'm pretty disgusted with it.

The touchier the subject, the more a joke needs to take refuge in absurdity.

Do you have an obsession with rape? Just curious since you seem to post about it a lot.

Anyway I saw this in the news and I thought two things. One the comedian is pretty well known for his schtick so I don't know why the woman went there. If it offended her she should have walked out.

That said, his response to her was wrong. For all he knew she lashed out because she was a rape victim so to encourage five men to rape her is pretty disgusting. And as I've stated in another thread, the likelihood of a rape victim being in the room is pretty high. So I think he was a pig to be honest.

I don't even understand whether he meant to say it would be funny if she WAS raped (as in, before the show), or whether he really meant to say it would be funny if she were to get raped at some point in the future.

Maybe it's just a matter of semantics...I can't decide which interpretation is less funny. :covereyes

Edit: Ah, I read the article. Disregard this post; the article makes it clear that it was the second scenario.

Actually, what he said, according to the woman, was that it would be funny if she got gang raped right then.

And, she didn't know who Tosh was. She went to see Dane Cook, of all people. Tosh was part of the same show.

Person unfamiliar with comedian's act heckles comedian... and gets verbally assaulted. I am shocked.

In other news, someone unfamiliar with the menu at Chili's berates the waiter for there being so much Tex-Mex on the menu... and finds spittle in his soup.

Oh, you're right. I understand now.

Totally not funny.

It would be funny if Tosh told a rape joke and immediately afterwards he was raped on the stage by, like, five guys.

I think anything that's funny is OK but when things are unfunny like Tosh's 'joke' it just makes me hate the person who says it. I still like the oldy - "Nine out of ten people enjoy gang rape."

The owner of the comedy club, who was present during Tosh's set, stated that the blog's account of the incident was inaccurate, and that Tosh had rather speculated the woman had "been raped by like, five guys".
Phew, it's all acceptable now. People who don't like rape jokes have probably been raped, nothing offensive about that.

That may not be exactly what happened.

To reiterate.

To say that Tosh was offensive because he wasn't funny is to beg the question, right? If art is subjective and being funny is the criteria then aren't all jokes about offensive subject matter axiomatically offensive to someone and therefore should not be told?

"how does one know when it is appropriate to joke about otherwise terrible things" was the question. Clues abound - and most of us still get it wrong on occasion. The best answer I can provide is to know your audience and your environment.

I've heard jokes that were raunchy/insensitive/disgusting/etc, and found them quite funny. I've heard relatively tame jokes, and sensed that others hearing the same joke were offended. For example, the day after the Shuttle Challenger disaster, I first heard the N(eed) A(nother) S(even) A(stronauts) joke, and I laughed. In a different setting, I might have found the exact same joke offensive.

For my money, one is not entitled to offense if they attend an adult comedy show.
