Hot off the press the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released some of the figures from the 2011 census. Link to the stats is below.

http://www.censusdata.abs.gov.au/ce...nsus/2011/quickstat/0?opendocument&navpos=220

Highlights
Population now 21,507,717. In 2006 = 19,855,290. Increase of 8%

Birthplace of parents |2011| %| 2006| %
Both parents born overseas| 6,876,586| 34.3 |5,868,729| 32.0
Father only born overseas| 1,407,270| 7.0| 1,299,784| 7.1
Mother only born overseas| 989,220| 4.9| 879,691| 4.8
Both parents born in Australia| 10,757,087| 53.7| 10,282,282 |56.1
Only a small majority of Australians have both parents born in Australia.

Religious affiliation top responses|2011| %| 2006| %
Catholic| 5,439,268| 25.3| 5,126,885| 25.8
No Religion| 4,796,787| 22.3| 3,706,553| 18.7
Anglican| 3,679,907 |17.1| 3,718,248| 18.7
Uniting Church| 1,065,795| 5| 1,135,427| 5.7
Presbyterian and Reformed| 599,515| 2.8| 596,667| 3

The good news is that the people of no religion has gone up. This could be because the number of people who do not believe in religion has gone up or it could be because people were told to put this down if they were not religious, rather than what a certificate says. This table says nothing about how often these people attend church.

Any comments? Opinions?

Edit.
The 2001 data can be found here http://www.censusdata.abs.gov.au/AB...sion=false&subaction=1#Person Characteristics

It showed that 15.5% had no religion in 2001 and 16.6% in 1996

Yup, "No Religion" comfortably in second place. I was going to start a thread about this. When you drill down though you find that the Catholics are not church goers in the main. And you will find that "no religion" people will baulk at being described as atheist. So in the end it's people taking a second to choose a convenient label.

At least 50% of those who ticked Catholic are not.

Trouble is what is the definition of a Catholic?
a. One who says they are Catholic?
b. One who attends church once every month or more?
c. One who follows the teachings of the Church?
d. One who has a baptism certificate?
e. Something else?

My boyfriend was once in Australia during the census. He was on a boat in the Great
Barrier Reef. They came around handing out census forms, insisting that everyone fill one out. Even he and his traveling companions, both of them US Citizens in Australia for two weeks total. Bizarre. At least they didn't make them vote!

They had a lucky break. Voting is compulsory in this country, you know.

In Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory, 'No Religion' is first place.

In Victoria and Queensland, it is second place, behind Catholics.

And in New South Wales it is third, behind Catholics and Anglicans.

Also, 'No Religion' by state or territory:

ACT = 28.9%
TAS = 28.6%
SA = 28.1%
WA = 25.5%
VIC = 24.0%
NT = 23.9%
QLD = 22.1%
NSW = 17.9%

The statistics clearly show a positive correlation between religiosity and rugby league. ;)

I always make up a religion. Although two censuses (sensei?) ago I was a Nullifidian.

Are you looking for a job? I spend a fair bit of time going through census data trying to find connections like this for my job. You nailed it. Brilliant. ;)

Australian Rules football is a religion.

This is excellent news!

It shows that all the major religions' populations have declined, while the non-religious population has increased by 3.6%!

What about the New-Age Spiritualists, who reject 'religion' for their own conglomeration of whatever doctrines are fashionable at any given time? They'd state 'No Religion', so the figures can't really distinguish between those who became atheists, or the hippies.
