Australia census

What about the New-Age Spiritualists, who reject 'religion' for their own conglomeration of whatever doctrines are fashionable at any given time? They'd state 'No Religion', so the figures can't really distinguish between those who became atheists, or the hippies.

True, but the battle against religion and the battle against woo are not exactly the same thing.

*wipes away tear of happiness*

I'd obviously like the not-religious percentage to be higher, but I can't complain. We're getting there, team, we're getting there. :)

By the way, where are all the Muslims amb was carrying on about? We all know Australia is becoming Australistan, right? RIGHT?! THE WORLD IS ENDING SHEEPLE WAKE UP OMG!

Hi there Gents. Please enlighten me. What is 'Woo' exactly?

All the funky BS under the umbrella of "supernatural", really, though I've seen it used inclusive of chiropractic, homeopathy, and other such rubbish.

Thanks for the definition.

I don't see the line between organised religion and homespun spirituality being all that defined. People still wave books and take money. ;)

:D But those homespun groups don't get political backing and government funding.

2.2% of the population are Islam. They are the 2nd most common non Christian religion.

Do you perhaps mean 'Muslim', or perhaps 'followers of Islam' or do you refer to those folks heading off to church every Sunday as 'Christianities'?

See Orphia Nay's link reproduced here.

Do you have some reason for thinking we'd be having trouble finding Orphia's post for ourselves?

You don't really understand what Legend's comment was about at all, do you?

In Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory, 'No Religion' is first place.

In Victoria and Queensland, it is second place, behind Catholics.

And in New South Wales it is third, behind Catholics and Anglicans.

Also, 'No Religion' by state or territory:

ACT = 28.9%
TAS = 28.6%
SA = 28.1%
WA = 25.5%
VIC = 24.0%
NT = 23.9%
QLD = 22.1%
NSW = 17.9%

The statistics clearly show a positive correlation between religiosity and rugby league. ;)

Have you got a link to the stats by state? I can't seem to find them at the ABS.

Thank you, Orphia! I tried to find that last night and failed. I need to run through the percentages now.

Cheers, Legend. :)

Here's a nifty thing.

http://abs.gov.au/census

Enter your postcode under Census Data - Quick Stats Search and you can see info about your area.

In my locale, here's the religion stats:

No Religion is leading the way, which is a relief, since we're still more religious than Victoria as a whole.

My mother works for the local Anglican church. She was updating the Church Roll this week.

Church Roll: 400 people.
"Anglicans" on the census: 1,420.
