I had my share of LOAC and Geneva Conventions training over the course of 20+ years. Argument about the morality or humanity (or lack thereof) notwithstanding, it was both stupid and wrong. It was a violation of law and orders. I'm reasonably sure that those marines got more LOAC training than I ever did (I was USAF and never in combat) so I can't fathom why they thought this would be a good idea.

I was referring to the use of snipers, and thieir (in some people's minds) cowardly nature. Snipers are a tool, that is all. And yes, war has evolved to be able to use deadly force even when the person projecting it is out of harm's way.

Your comments are offensive. Anyone, repeat anyone, who is 'over there' for their country is braver than anyone who sits at home and whines. Even non-combatant typists and pen pushers have my respect as I'd guess there's nowhere over there that you can be sure you are safe. Whether you think the war is right or wrong, the guys and gals over there are all brave.

When they are digitally-recorded wearing US military uniforms and are constrained by Geneva Convention and UCMJ Rules & Regs, sure you can.

What you as a private citizen might do to dead bodies is irrelevant except to local law & order enforcement.

Oh I despair to think how few friends the U.S. will have when it eventually slips down the totem pole. The saddest thing will be all the people who genuinely wonder where the pals went.

So no cowards ever joined the armed force, either due to peer pressure or a belief they could dodge combat?

No small town putz with no prospects ever thought the fear of getting shot at was less than that of ending up homeless?

Hahaha I really find that genuinely funny - you stopped me in my tracks as I've never been accused of jingoism before, although I've certainly accused several Americans of it :-)

Re-reading it I suppose it was a bit twee - but I got hacked off seeing Oliver claim that snipers are cowards, all of them by implication. Have a go at Oliver for his generalization and I'll admit that I made one too :)

Since snipers have to travel in to enemy territory without back-up, shoot folks that may be beloved by the enemy, then get their asses out alive, I just assumed the suggestion of cowardice was so ludicrous as to be unworthy of mention.

They should be punished because it reflects poorly on the US. But beyond that, I don't care. Yeah, it is stupid. But it is not like pissing on dead people hurts anyone.
