The Homosexual Lifestyle

I lulz at the phrase "homosexual lifestyle", conservatives don't bother to define what the "lifestyle" consists of... well, at least beyond being a homosexual. I don't know what the phrase means, my gay friends don't, no gay person I've ever met does, so what possible facts regarding the "gay lifestyle" do conservatives possess that I don't? Nothing in particular... well, at least nothing beyond making **** up about people they don't know and have never met.

My mother-in-law's husband actual uses the term "homosexual lifestyle". He blames the "homosexual lifestyle" for the reason my wife and I don't visit more often (it's because they bring guns to the dinner table and live too far away).

9:00 AM: I'm a software developer, I make rich white men I've never seen or met become even richer and (optionally) whiter.
Somewhat OP, but I never heard of rich white men making themselves whiter. Some of them make themselves moderately darker -- rich white women, more so. Google "tanning salons" for that strange practice.

Sorry about that :)

Conservatives spend a lot of time criticizing gay people on a very abstract level: "gay lifestyle", "gay agenda", "sanctity of marriage" all refer to very intangible harms, not to any specific concrete harm to anyone.

Not too long ago, Louis Marinelli was a key strategist for the National Organization for Marriage. In 2011, he went on a state-to-state tour protesting gay marriage. At every stop, he was met with protesters, gay couples demanding an explanation for why their love and commitment to one another is "less valid" or "more perverted" than heterosexual couples. By the end the tour, he was greeted with the largest number of protesters, and slowly, it dawned on him: gay couples are normal people with fairly ordinary lives, they don't want to tear apart the social fabric of society, they don't want to obliterate morality, they don't want to topple free trade... they want to get married and raise families for the exact same reasons that heterosexuals do.

He met real people, put a human face on what he'd always characterized with intangible words. Gay people are actually very ordinary, they worry about paying bills, get stuck in traffic, send their kids to school, get into fights, make up, some have an inordinate interest in toy helicopters and vegan foodums.

Shortly after the tour, Marinelli resigned his position with NOM and wrote a fairly lengthy post titled I now support full marriage equality. Mind you, he's the guy who passed prop 8, lobbied millions of dollars to put anti-gay marriage senators in office, testified in front of congress that gay men are nearly always child molestors and have lifespans decades shorter than straight men while the US considered repealing DOMA -- in spite of recanting and rebuking his position, let me state categorically: **** Louis Marinelli, **** him in the face with the fury of a thousand suns.

My mum explained homosexuality to me when I was about nine.

We were at a festival, and she signed a petition to allow homosexual couples to get married.

I asked her what gay meant.

She said 'You know how your dad and I love each other so we got married to spend the rest of our lives together? Gay couples are a man and a man or a woman and a woman who feel the same as your father and I'.

It made sense to me.

I have never understood why people get so freaked out, except that they might be emotionally or socially retarded.

My apologies in advance but every time I return to read new posts in this thread I am more and more temped to post the following:

A young guy from the Country goes to the Big City for the first time in his life by himself. While he's walking down down the street, he decides he needs a beer and drops into the closest bar. After ordering, he looks around and sees that there are only women present.

Not believing his luck he sidles up to a gorgeous girl at the other end of the bar and starts chatting her up. After a couple of minutes the girl says, "You sound like a nice guy but you should know that I'm a lesbian". The guy looks puzzled and replies, "I don't think I've met anyone from Lesbia before. It it somewhere in Europe?" "No. No," says the girl, "you don't understand. You see that red head over there. I'm very
sexually attracted to her".

The guy looks and says, "Wow. Me too. I think I must be a Lesbian too!"

We are all lesbians at heart. :duck:

The short answer: If you see The Gay, you might catch The Gay.

Slightly Longer Answer: I think it has a lot to do with age. Parents want their kids to be happy and let's face it, growing up gay in the 20th century was not plesant. What parent would want their child subjected to ridicule, rejection and possibly loneliness (if you lived in the sticks). Many folks didn't want their kids to be gay because society made it so darn tough. Ever read The Well of Loneliness? Every book, movie or TV show with a gay characters seemed to have had them either dying or being "converted" at the end. Remember the end of The Children's Hour? Even the suggestion of a lesbian relationship would cause one to committ suicide. Who would want that for themselves or their children?

I'm 47 and I'm amazed how much things have changed since the time I was trying to come out in 1980. At the high school where I teach, gay kids kiss in the hallways and no one takes notice. Yes, I do teach is an extremely open-minded school but I think we are slowly getting to the point where no one is gonna care who you love.

How can you live in such a conservative Midwestern city such as Omaha. Many people there have such a hard time with people that have an alternative life style. I would suggest treatment. Maybe a biannual trip to the west coast where such things are more common. Living in Lincoln, I frequent Vegas a couple of times/year to get my fix. Somehow we need to find common ground for all the nerds and geeks and convince Fry's to build an establishment much closer. Best Buy is ok but is no replacement.

You'd think a guy named Soapy would appreciate the benefits of bathing.
Oh, we at Soapy Solutions Corp. are in favour of scrubbing. Just hear those cash register bells ring!
I was merely surprised that Shemp seemed to care.

Serious question. Why Omaha and not some place like say San Fran? I've read your programming posts and you obviously know your ****, you would have no problem finding well paid work in a city like SF where there is a much much higher chance of you meeting someone else you might enjoy spending time with.

We have so much in common with lesbians. Why can't they see that? :)

I really like Omaha :) Low cost of living, low crime, there's actually an inordinate number of developer positions here*, and let me tell you one thing about Nebraska (and Iowa) that I see more than anywhere: nice people.

[anecdote mode="awesome"]
So, a few years ago, my uncle came up to visit Houston, TX. Right around that time, I'd just bought a new car. This was uncle's first time in Nebraska, I figured I'd show him around, he asked to drive my car and I let him. Sure, go for it!

Ok, so we pull out to an intersection, there's a red light. We sit there for a moment, it goes green, and I swear not more than 3 milliseconds later my uncle is slamming the hell out of the horn BEEP BEEEP BEEP BEEEEEEP! Holy hell, calm down! Give her time to go!

Another intersection, we're 3 or 4 cars behind, light turns gree-BEEP BEEEP BEEEEEP. What the hell is wrong with you?! They're going to go, just wait for them. This exchange happens at least 4 more times because my uncle realizes, "oh crap, I'm the only one doing this." Good thing too because you'll get a ticket aggressively blasting your horn like that.

He was up here for two weeks. My uncle commented how everyone here is so nice, and nobody uses their horn.
[/anecdote]

I went to Boston once and NEVER ever again. People are mean as hell, driving is a nightmare. I can always pick out the non-natives and out-of-towners, they smile.

Eventually I'll get out of Nebraska, don't know where I'd go :)

* Development in Omaha is usually with established companies. Boulder Colorado, NY, SoCal, and Redmond have not only a large population, but really good tech schools; we don't really have tech universities, which kind of dries up the market for startups.

Hehehehe....here in New York we are known as Cuomosexuals and shortly "gay marriage" will be added to "incurable insanity" and "irreconcilable differences" as a reason for divorce. Afterwhich those who fear The Gay will go back to boycotting the Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner and the New Jersey Devils (with breaks to stone rowdy teens).

Heh. I live 35 miles west of Boston, and only go there once every few months. And when I do, I ride the train if at all possible.

However, I absolutely refuse to live beyond easy drive to the ocean. So Omaha is not an option to me.

Watched a guy driving into the Mall, cellphone glued to the ear, laid back stance, and honking at someone who got in his way. Cellphone never moved.

+1 :)

I think anti-gay people get so upset because being straight works for them, and being intimate with a member of the same gender is gross and profoundly distasteful, so they generalize their own private experience as a rule that should (and must!) be true for everyone.

No joke, but several times in the last year or so, I've run into the phrase "I don't have homophobia, I have homonausea, the thought makes me sick" straight from the mouths of anti-gay people themselves. That pretty much summarizes the entire argument against homosexuality: "two dudes kissing is really really gross (but two girls is totally hawt)". Most anti-gay organizations leave out the parenthetical because it makes them look like jackasses, even though 97.5%* of the men in those organizations enjoy that variety of smut anyway.

* remaining 2.5% of men are statistically likely to enjoy guy on guy, actual figure may be higher among homopho--errrm, homonauseatists.

Indeed. I remember back in the 1980s when the God botherers said that AIDS was sent to wipe out the gays, while conveniently ignoring the fact that it wasn't being transmitted via lesbian sex.
