At the time that the perps were laying these fortress caves on the population people were running around saying things like ' They are coming to take our freedom'. This was after they had been traumatised into a state of complete terror and suggestibilty by 9/11, the Anthrax attacks, the media and the government.

If you think that it was an accident ask yourself whether you would believe Rumsfeld today or whether ypu can imagine yourself saying 'they are coming to take our freedom'.You were played like fish.

I think you will find, Mr Smith, that most people here, with perhaps the occasional exception, was not played but rather players. Albeit players very far down the food chain - nonetheless willing, if foolish, participants

This is a vast philosophic movement, consisting of an outer and an inner ring. You might even call the outer ring the laity and the inner ring the priesthood. I prefer to call the outer ring the innocent section, the inner ring the supremely guilty section. The outer ring—the main mass of their supporters—are merely anarchists; that is, men who believe that rules and formulas have destroyed human happiness. They believe that all the evil results of human crime are the results of the system that has called it crime. They do not believe that the crime creates the punishment. They believe that the punishment has created the crime. They believe that if a man seduced seven women he would naturally walk away as blameless as the flowers of spring. They believe that if a man picked a pocket he would naturally feel exquisitely good. These I call the innocent section."

Why would it be a problem doing a significant amount of planing from a cave. I wonder if the same argument can be used for the US. We didn't stop it because we run our air defenses from a cave.

Assuming that was true, he seems to have been, well, wrong.

Well Oystein, looks like you inadvertantly proved that the meme started with official sources.

Anyone here think a bunch of apartment dwelling university students can't figure out how to fly an airplane?

The "Mountain Fortress" image was created by a British newspaper, based on the accounts of some Russian dude speaking to the New York Times about something he claimed to have seen in the 80s. Except they moved the location of the joint, and if I'm not mistaken, wildly exaggerated.

So, it didn't originate with "official sources", but with the media. I'm not sure what Rummy was smoking, but he seems to have been a bit carried away. Or just plain misinformed. Note that the fortress was debunked weeks after his statement, but you don't hear much about that from the press. I wonder why?

All of this is irrelevant, of course, since the media largely said OBL was holed up in this alleged fortress from Western attack, not that he necessarily planned 9/11 there.

Well Oystein, looks like you inadvertantly proved that the meme started with official sources.

The myth started with wild speculation by the media, that Truthers picked, misinterpreted, and stuck to like glue because it ostensibly supports their theory of the West making OBL a scapegoat, even when there are several more likely possibilities and it has been conclusively debunked.

End of line.

Do you really think this was the same context as the "truther" meme? I've never seen it used in a derogatory sense by any MSM (or official) source.

So what?
The important point here is not how the meme started, but who buys it. My assertion is that only truthers lapped up the meme happily, while debunkers mostly reject it.

Red, you are now the fourth truther with an opinion in this thread, and yet you too do not participate in the poll. I would like to know: In your mind, is "hiding in caves" part of the official story and believed by debunkers?
