Underwriters Laboratories is the company that certified the steel components used in the construction of the World Trade Center towers. The information in this letter is of great importance.

Having recently reviewed your team's report of 10/19/04, I felt the need to contact you directly.
As I'm sure you know, the company I work for certified the steel components used in the construction of the WTC buildings. In requesting information from both our CEO and Fire Protection business manager last year, I learned that they did not agree on the essential aspects of the story, except for one thing - that the samples we certified met all requirements. They suggested we all be patient and understand that UL was working with your team, and that tests would continue through this year. I'm aware of UL's attempts to help, including performing tests on models of the floor assemblies. But the results of these tests appear to indicate that the buildings should have easily withstood the thermal stress caused by pools of burning jet fuel.

The report if I understand it correctly suggests a complex environment.
It is attacked by acid, and the the hydrogen that is created burns very close to the sample. Temperature of 950C reached. The flame temperature of hydrogen burning in air is 2200C.
Because of thermal conduction the steel sample moves heat to non-flame exposed areas.
The FeS liquifies and enters the structure of the steel. I guess it was nnear the surface since it would have enough oxygen for the flame and to account for some of the chemical reactions.
This in not inconsistent with exposure to a H2S at a high temperature. The environment seems too hot for Sulfuric Acid to form. It still reacts with the steel, and still produces hydrogen to produce a hot flame.
It's difficult understanding what is written in the paper without a formal qualification in that area. In a nut shell what is happening is Sulphur from a gas is diffusing into the solid steel. Decarburisation is occurring, that's the diffusion of Carbon out of the surface of the steel. Oxidation is also occurring.
As the O and S diffuse in they will form FeO and FeS at varying concentrations (see phase diagrams). If the temperature is hot enough liquid FeS will form (988°C) if the composition of FeS is at the eutectic composition. This liquid will further attack the steel preferentially along grain boundaries accelerating the corrosion process by weakening the grain boundaries causing grains to "pull out" (no longer be attached). As it does so, it allows sulphur to penetrate even deeper into the steel via diffusion and accelerate the process. If FeO and FeS are present at the Fe-O-S eutectic composition then liquid will be present at 940°C.
The second sample has copper mixed in. Either a hot conventional material fire or a hydrogen fed fire may have melted the copper on to the steel.
The molten copper would tend to indicate high temperatures though a low oxygen content. The copper may have melted purely from heat conduction and migrated as a liquid. Just a guess.
It would indicate more H2S gas corrosion than a liquid sulfuric acid attack. The H2S is more mobile and moves as a gas rather than the liquid (and gravity driven) sulfuric acid.
The copper you observe is called a copper flash or strike that is part of the process in Nickel electroplating for corrosion resistance. A flash of copper is applied onto the steels surface before the nickel layer is put on. What's happening is the high temperature is causing solid copper to diffuse into (move through) solid steel. No melting required. It's only when CuS is formed will there be a lowering of the melting point with a possibility of liquid forming and leading to Liquid Metal Embrittlement.
Look up solid state diffusion and understand that at high temperatures atoms from one element can diffuse into the surface of a material made from a different element.
SO2 and H2S are the most likely species for S but there is no evidence of H being ignited or burned causing very high temperatures.

I'm a metallurgist and I've got quite a lot of experience with aluminium alloys. They are far from weak, why do you think we use them if they are weak? Look up strength to weight ratio sometime.

<sigh> Kevin Ryan did not work for U.L. he was a water tester for a subsidiary company. U.L. has NEVER certified steel. They test and rate building assemblies. Kevin Ryan falsely represented U.L. Kevin Ryan is a liar and a fraud.....and that is who troofers place their trust

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to incendiary devices, and more particularly, to incendiary devices for producing controlled-diameter holes in metallic targets.
BACKGROUND
In the disposal of unserviceable explosive ordnances, incendiary devices are often used to burn through the ordnance casing and to ignite or otherwise destroy the ordnance payload. Thermite devices are often used for this purpose. Thermite devices are also used for unconventional warfare activities. Examples include the destruction of machinery or metallic structures, or the destruction of biological agents or precursors.
Destruction of metallic targets can be accomplished by cutting a hole through the casing steel and fusing the gears, pistons, and shaft with a stream of molten iron at 4500.degree. F. It has unlimited uses for attacking and destroying transformers, generators, electric motors, engine blocks, gun barrels, breech blocks, and mines. Storage tanks or drums can be cut through, causing the contents to flow out. If the liquid is flammable a fire and deflagration will result.
Destruction of biological agent and/or its precursor can be accomplished with a minimum collateral release by melting through a steel target (such as fermentation equipment, production equipment, storage drum, or warhead) to render the target unusable to an enemy and destroying the fill material by heating and incendiary action.
Thermite, one of the most common pyrotechnic incendiary agents, is essentially a mixture of powdered ferric oxide and powdered or granular aluminum. When raised to its ignition temperature, an intense reaction occurs whereby the oxygen in the ferric oxide is transferred to the aluminum, producing molten iron, aluminum oxide, and releasing approximately 750 kilocalories per gram. The reaction proceeds as follows:
This exothermic reaction may produce a temperature of about 4500.degree. F. under favorable conditions. The white-hot molten iron and slag can itself prolong and extend the heating and incendiary action.
