TAM10 date & place?

We swamped the food options because we were there at the same time as the BMX, golf, and martial arts groups.

And there was a big bowling tournament also. I saw lots of people with bowling balls getting on and off the hotel elevators. It seems that there is room to grow in the future if more resources could be reserved for TAM. The South Point's dilemma would be utilization of facilities that TAM doesn't require, like the bowling alley, equestrian center, and exhibit hall.

There is a regular arena (http://www.southpointeventscenter.com/arena.php) that TAM could expand into, but I think that would make TAM feel more like a rock concert than a conference. A conference doesn't seem complete without gaudy hotel carpet and draped tables.

oops, I may have confused golf with bowling in my earlier post.

Concur. If I'm being a bit selfish, I don't want to see TAM any bigger than it currently is and I suspect I'd like it better at 700-1000 attendees rather than 1500+ (I've only been to TAM 8 & 9), so expanding to an arena doesn't sound like an improvement to me.

Of course, bigger TAM -> bigger-name speakers, more money for JREF, etc.

Perhaps if the South Point were booked almost exclusively for TAM that would work.

I agree with dasmiller, the whole point is fund raising for education. I don't have much in the way of funds but it makes me feel good to know that at least a little of my money is going to such a worthy cause. I believe TAM will continue to grow just because the more people who know about it, the more people who want to come. We just had dinner with two people who were astounded they had never heard of it, and want to come next year.

How big a driver do you own?:eye-poppi

Heh!

Signs that you might be using the wrong ball to play golf:

1) Your caddy accidentally dropped the ball on his foot and broke 2 toes
2) You scored 172 strokes, and only completed 1 hole
3) It takes 19 tees to support the ball
4) They've asked you not to call "fore"
5) You switched from a driver to a croquet mallet and your score improved
6) Your golf ball is black and has only 3 dimples

Probably not for the casino, though, I would imagine their takings drop when TAM is on (as I think it was Neil Degrasse Tyson referred to a Physics conference which was asked not to return to Vegas for a similar reason).

If we do TAM the second weekend of July again next year, it'll be during Comic-Con. That's going to be a tough choice for some folks.

The first weekend in July is CONvergence in Minneapolis, which has had a skeptics track for the last three years, including a few of the people who spoke at TAM9.

The second weekend, like when we had it this year, is Comic-Con. There is some nerd overlap, but I don't know how many tammers make it there.

The next two weekends I don't know of anything. Extending it beyond there starts making travel difficult for those doing both TAM and Dragon*Con.

I don't know how much (if any) of that will factor into their scheduling. I hope they tell us something soon.

I would imagine that trying to schedule things around other skeptical events (or events with skeptical tracks) would take precedence over not conflicting with something like Comic-Con, despite the slight nerd overlap.

When TAM started, there were no other Skeptics conferences, that I know of.

Now we have TAM (10), TAM London (2), NECSS (3), Skepticon (3), Convergence (3?), a skeptics track at DragonCon (3?), SkeptiCAL (3), and, new this year, CSICon in New Orleans (1). Plus the 1-2 Shermer has organized on a sporadic basis. Not to mention smaller gatherings around the country like Skepticamps and Skeptics In The Pub. This whole thing has really exploded.

This is a good point. I think prior to TAM, the only skeptical conferences that existed were the much smaller ones organized by the Skeptics Society, starting around the mid-90s (?). It's good news for the skeptical movement (even for those who say there is no such thing) that planners and attendees need to think about conflicting dates now.

I agree, but if they have a choice in weekends...

TAM is the King of All Skeptical Conferences! Other conferences should be scheduling their things around us, dang it.
