I thought that the whole consensus of this thread was that there are much more masculine gay men then there are effeminate gay men. If that is the case, then why should you be surprised when you find out that a masculine man is gay?

To date, AFAIK, he has not discussed his personal life... at all. He has stated it is partly due to his role as a journalist, and partly because of his mother's detailing of her affairs.

But folks sure do talk about his sexual orientation. It has been reported he is gay.

Why is it so hard to accept that many gays are effeminate and many lesbians are "butch" and that sometimes it's pretty damn obvious, but that hardly means all or most of them are? I just don't get it. I know, publicly or privately, gays and lesbians who were obviously so for a long time before they "came out", and also some that I had no idea were so before they "came out". No doubt I know some people whom I don't know are gay or lesbians because they didn't come out and/or they are casual acquaintances whose sex life is none of my business even in passing.

I dare say my experience is typical.

Because I never would have guessed that Gershwin was gay!
Just because I'm aware that one can't always know when someone is gay, doesn't mean one cannot be surprised to find out every now and then.

Maybe I am too late for my 2 cent (eurocent), but the few homosexual I ever met , none of the men were effeminate, none of the women were butch, the only one I ever "watched" acting like that were on TV show as stereotype.

Well, if what has been vigorously debated by you guys and generally accepted by me now is true, then him being gay should come as no surprise at all. Behaving completely masculine and being gay is the overwhelming majority. Now, if he were effeminate and then came out as gay, then it should be surprising to you because it has also been suggested in this thread that there are actually more effeminate straight guys then there are gay guys.

And just because someone questions you or disagrees with you does not mean that they are trolling.

Most serial killers act normal. Nonetheless, it can still be surprising when a normal-seeming person turns out to be a serial killer.
