Are most homosexuals atheists?

My mom's church (a Congregational church) is an "open and affirming" church meaning they welcome everyone regardless of sexual orientation and perform commitment ceremonies. They performed gay marriages as well, at least until Prop 8 ruined it. Their church overlooks the anti-gay parts of the Bible, but at least they are honest about their cherry-picking. Yeah, it's not so hard to be gay and Jewish, unless you're orthodox. As for them, there is a really good documentary movie from a few years ago about homosexual orthodox and ultra-orthodox Jews -- Trembling Before God. All of the people featured in the movie are completely rejected by the religious community and in many cases are rejected by their families too. But their faith is as strong as ever. It's how they were raised, the life they're used to, and they can't even conceive of not living as a religious Jew. Very interesting stuff.
 
I'm a member of a gay website which as a religous section. Reasons for why they're gay and christian. And the conflict between homosexuality and the bible can be answered by the following from what I've seen over the years

God loves me so he wouldn't condemn me

God created me so he wouldn't condemn me

Things have been mistranslated

A loving relationship isn't condemned

Jesus never condemns it

It's only the deed that's condemned

What? Nothing about the Apostles being a gay boys club? I'm disappointed. I thought it was clear that Judas was ragging on Mary Magdaline because he thought she was one of those girls who like to hang out around gay guys.

If there's one thing skeptics know, it's that people can compartmentalise and find a way to justify anything to themselves/ourselves.
 
Rather than concentrating on the seven "clobber" passages, they derive their beliefs from biblical themes of love, caring for other humans, inclusiveness, and justice. When they do study the "clobber" passages they often interpret them very differently and conclude that the Bible is silent on loving, committed consensual same-sex relationships. Typical interpretations are:

Genesis 19 discusses the city residents' intent to rape strangers.
Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 condemns same-sex behavior, but only in Pagan temples.
Various passages in Deuteronomy, Judges and Kings condemn prostitution.
1 Corinthians 6 condemns child molesters.
Romans 1 describes heterosexuals going against their nature by engaging in same-sex behavior.
1 Timothy 1 contains thoughts similar to Romans 1.
Jude 1:7 accuses the men of Sodom of intent to commit bestiality: having forcible sex with a non-human species -- angels in this case.

Their conclusion is obvious: The Bible condemns same-sex abuse -- rape, desecrating holy places, prostitution, child molestation, bestiality and sexual activity against one's basic nature. It is silent on consensual same-sex activity by persons with a homosexual or bisexual relationship within a loving committed relationship.

Or be a Christian and have money in the bank, or be a Christian and not make a habit of tearing your eyes out. Et cetera.

Religion is a subset of culture, and as such it transforms and adapts constantly. Around here, Christian fundamentalism is a relatively fringe phenomenon, and naturally, homosexuality is a less contentious subject. Religious ceremonies for same-sex couples are common a lot of places (at the vicar's discretion).

I'm not a fan of religion nor of hypocrisy. In this case, though, if refraining from persecuting sexual minorities is the hypocritical thing to do, I'm certainly not going to be the one to call it out.

This much is obvious, just by your asking the question.


I've known gays and lesbians who were:
-Catholic
-Methodist
-Buddhist
-Atheist
-New-Age hippy-dippy "wiccan"
-Jewish
-nothing in particular

by far the most UNHAPPY homosexuals I've known were the ones who grew up convinced that God hated them. The happiest were the ones who could reconcile their predispositions with their belief systems.

This is true. But what I am referring to is a very large social issue that is specifically addressed in the bible as being an abomination. Something that is specifically addressed as not being allowed in the kingdom of heaven. I have a feeling that you already knew what I was talking about though...
