Merged 8.8 quake in Sendai, Japan

there are no commercials on the swiss News Channel. and it is pretty much pro nuclear.

so much for your conspiracy theory......

just like truthers lol
You have a good point but you aren't helping matters in how you are telling it.

The board is an international community. Some people forget that and think their experience with the news media is everyone's experience with the news media.

That doesn't make them truthers. And there are experts among us as well. Though as I've posted, some of them are attacking everyone as fear mongers when they aren't even close.

As showing support for Japan.

Why, what's wrong with it ?

If that's a genuine question then it's considered on a par with the Nazi Swastika by certain sections of the world who suffered untold atrocities under the imperial Japanese army during the War.

If you want to show support for Japan then their national flag would be more appropriate.

I don't think its worth having an argument over at this time but it would certainly show some sensitivity on your part if you changed it. If nothing it else it grates on me and maybe some others and distracts from the main point of this thread.

As I understand it Hydrogen should not have formed at all if cooling had gone as planned. As I understand it it is a byproduct of things going wrong. How long cooling will take at those particular facilities depends on whether cooling there can be restored to normal - with circulating Water - or proceeds under improvised circumstances resulting from failures to get normal cooling operations going again because of inadequate pumps/power supplies.

Part of the problem in cooling down a reactor is the heat generated by short lived radionuclides. But as these decay, the amount of heat they generate drops. The IAEA reported that several reactors in the damage area had reached cold shutdownWP yesterday. As all of the reactors shut down their chain reactions when the quake occurred, I would expect to see the problem reactors reach cold shutdown in the next day or two.

He does have a point in that we aren't all subject to the idiotic US news model. OTOH, there are plenty of real experts on the forum. It's just that any discussion of the actual hazards is being trounced on here as fear mongering and that's just bull.

I don't think it is. To be honest I don't think I have seen too much discussion of the actual hazards. There seems to be a lack of perspective because we are discussing a nuclear risk rather than any other.

If we were evacuating people because an oil refinery might explode I doubt people would be discussing the entire future of the oil industry.

I think people are struggling with the concept of a nuclear power plant exploding and radiation being released and yet somehow it not being a totally catastrophic world ending event.

Other people seem to simply be wanting us all to agree that its the end of the world and we only have ourselves to blame.

yup im a bit to much in bezerk mode :D

It's a big election year over here.

Seems to be universal rule for almost every country that has elections on earth: The number of intelligent decisions you get from a Government goes down the closer it gets to an election year.

I am really hoping the gang at SKeptic's guide goes Nuclear (pun intended) on the way the media has mishandled this situation.

Just to follow up on Dan O's claim the USGS doesn't post this stuff in real time, the new 6.0 is already up. And there was a 6.2 quake 2 hours earlier.

Never mind, I see I'm behind in the thread. So the 6.2 was the Tokyo quake and the new one, the 6.0 is north of the original quake.

But if you notice when the alert went out:
Created: 15 minutes, 46 seconds after earthquake.

The USGS does have a dense network of sensors in the US that allows posting fast alerts for quakes in the US. The Japanese Meteorological agency runs a large network of sensors in Japan and does fast alerts for Japan.

From what I've seen on WNN all reactors seem to be shut down:

http://www.world-nuclear-news.org/indtalk.aspx

All four units at the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant have now achieved cold shutdown - where coolant water is at less than 100ºC - with full operation of cooling systems, Tepco reported. All the reactors shut down automatically during last week’s earthquake and have remained safe. While unit 3’s shutdown went as expected, damage to the emergency core cooling systems of units 1, 2 and 4 led to the announcement of emergency status. These three reactors were prepared for potential pressure release, but this was never required. Unit 1 announced cold shutdown at 1.24 am on 14 March and unit 2 followed at 3.52 am. Tepco has now announced that unit 4 achieved cold shutdown at 7.15 pm on 15 March. Water levels are now stable in all four reactors and offsite power is available, the company said.
