I usually hate to go with the 'truth must be somewhere in between', but I find it frustrating that any reasonable discussion or attempt to discuss the actual problems with this reactor event, current and future, is bullied off the thread as 'in with the fear mongerers'.
Japan has very little land mass and a large population. The risk of losing any significant amount (PLEASE NOTE: I DID NOT SAY THIS IS HAPPENING OR WOULD HAPPEN) of land mass to radioactive particulates is worse because of that geographical fact.
The levels of radioactivity going down suggests it's being diluted. At the moment, the risk seems to be only in a very small area around the plants. But now there are 4 reactors out of 6 at the site with definite 'issues' and the other 2 at the facility are reported to be having trouble as well. At some point those radioactive particulates begin to accumulate in the surrounding areas. To dismiss that as not a risk, not likely, not Chernobyl, yadda yadda, doesn't address the real problem. It only says what the problem is not. So when does it become a problem?
That doesn't mean I'm fear mongering. It doesn't mean I'm over reacting. It doesn't mean I think people are going to die or get cancer from the exposure. It just means I have a question. That's it, a friggin question.
Also, the dust plume that had low levels of radioactive particulates wasn't harmful on the skin because it could be readily washed off. But the people in the path of the dust plume would also have breathed a small amount of the dust in. That dust (very little would reach the lungs unless it was really fine particulates) ends up in the nose, mouth and gut. So the half life of the active particles would mean the radiation exposure would accumulate as the particulates worked their way through the intestines. Without knowing the amount inhaled, it's hard to calculate the risk. I'd like to know if the reports on the amount of radiation exposure (same as a month's worth or one Xray or one flight, whatever) included a calculation for what would have been inhaled.
