should an Arab man who lost his home and kicked out of Israel in 1948, and now lives in the USA, be prevented by American law from boycotting Israeli products & services?

Should he be allowed? Sure, why not. I don't disagree with his right to refuse to buy Israeli products. It's when his company acts on behalf of foreign countries in boycotting another countries products that it becomes a problem for me. Should U.S. companies act on behalf of foreign countries to influence foreign policies in states that their companies are not based in? I say no. If you say yes, you should say that's what you think

why does a Holocaust survivor have the right to boycott German products, but a victim of the Nahkba NOT have the right to boycott Israeli goods?

A holocaust denier, as well as a Nahkba survivor, have the right to refuse to purchase products from companies/entities they have a moral problem with. But then, that's not what's being discussed here, is it, Thunder? The laws being discussed have to do with American companies being influenced by foreign entities to influence Israeli policy due to economic boycotts.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/04/education/04hummus.html

At Princeton and DePaul Universities, Palestinian students and their supporters have challenged the sale of Sabra hummus in an effort to focus attention on accusations that Israeli military forces violated human rights.

Cool. Sounds like a waste of time though. Sabra, after all, is primarily a U.S. owned company. None the less, it's almost as if these 'activists' intend to hurt the company that produces a delicious spread made of chick peas and tahini as opposed to drawing attention to accusations centered around Israeli military violations of human rights. I don't think I need to tell you how the two do not correlate.

In addition to the campus efforts against Sabra hummus, there is a broader boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, framing Israel as analogous to South Africa in the era of apartheid. In October, in Philadelphia, a flash mob went into a supermarket to call for a Sabra boycott, singing, “Don’t buy into Israeli apartheid.”

cool huh? :)

There's that acronym. BDS. Have you looked into it yet?

Have these 'flash mobs' been prosecuted yet?

Freudian slip?

well, from what I have read, in the USA it is illegal for Joe Bloe, owner of the Joe Bloe shoe factory, to have a stated policy of not purchasing any materials or products from Israeli suppliers.

how do you feel about that?

...and btw, NYC has this little law, barring any contractors from doing business with the City of New York, unless they totally boycott Northern Ireland or follow very strict rules in terms of doing business with companies and entities in Northern Ireland. Its called the "McBride Principles", and it apparently motivates folks to simply boycott Northern Ireland, rather then take the chance of being disqualified from doing business with NYC.

how do you feel about that?

edit: it appears the McBride Principles are Federally enforced, and enforced by many states and cities (especially ones with lots o' the Irish). Anyway, NYC contractors are required to abide by these principles or literally "boycott Northern Ireland". Yes, that is an actual option. That's verbatim.

I totally support the following:

No.

I think the Legs Akimbo League for Anti-Zionist Street Theater Ensemble is the absolute opposite of cool.

Is this them?

How do I feel about what? Is it my problem you can't interpret a law as it is written?

How do I feel about what? Why don't you actually copy/paste what the law is about?

The law is to make sure companies that do business with the Federal govt., or any other governments that chose to follow, do not also do business with companies or institutions in Northern Ireland that supposedly discriminate against folks of another religion (Catholics).

But, rather than abide by the stringent regulations of the McBride Principles, a company may simply avoid business with Northern Ireland altogether. So yes, with this stipulation, the law actually encourages companies to in fact boycott Ulster companies.

The source that I am quoting is from the an official NYC document which I will not mention at this time, as it reveals too much about my job with the city.

But I will tomorow post the entire text, if you like.

oh look, I found it:

MacBride Principles-

The contractor and any individual or legal entity in which the Contractor holds a ten percent (10%) or greater
ownership interest and any individual or legal entity that holds a ten percent (10%) or greater ownership interest
in the Contractor either:

(a) has no business operations in Northern Ireland,

or

(b) shall take lawful steps in good faith to conduct any business operations in Northern Ireland in accordance with the MacBride Principles, and shall permit independent monitoring of their compliance with such principles.

Well heck, if I was a company, I'd just avoid Ulster altogether. Wouldn't you?

Oh God! I think Thunder was talking about these people.

I hope I never, ever, ever meet any of them in my whole life.

Greg Gutfeld, host of FOX News "Red Eye" covered this story:

Is every one okay? Does anyone need a bucket?

I haven’t seen anything that hairy since they drained the pool at the Playboy mansion.

Yes, I apologize for scarring your retinas, but it must be done. You need to be reminded how foolish students can be – but also, how entertaining their foolishness is, provided you aren’t close enough to smell their unshaven pits.

So, the gist: in these students misguided brains, hummus is worse than… Hamas.

I only hope that the idiocy they flaunt in that clip is more than matched by the sheer embarrassment of their parents.

Note: If these shameless creatures are your offspring, please stop paying their tuition, and force them to fend for themselves. My guess is any hummus will start looking tasty, for it will be all these hopeless sacks of self-congratulating cretins can afford.

And if you disagree with me, you’re a racist, homophobic hummusaphobe.

LOL. Loonies.

Hey Thunder. Do you use a cell phone? Motorola did a lot of R&D in Israel to develop the mobile phone.

Microsoft, Intel, Motorola, Google. Israel is the Silicon Valley of the Middle East. Are you boycotting all of that?

Northern Ireland has a few wee problems with sectarianism. That's the point of the legislation. It isn't a de jure or a de facto boycott.

Northern Ireland has a few wee problems with sectarianism.

yes, that's why its OK to motivate American businesses to simply avoid all Ulster companies and institutions.

I wonder.....what sort of influence did Irish Republican, nationalist, and associated groups have in getting this legislation passed?

hmmm....;)

its interesting how the USA can make it illegal to boycott Israel with the right hand, and motivate folks to boycott another country with the left. cute huh?

oh look, I found it:

MacBride Principles-

These Principles?

1. Increasing the representation of individuals from under-represented religious groups in the workforce including managerial, supervisory, administrative, clerical and technical jobs.
2. Adequate security for the protection of minority employees both at the workplace and while traveling to and from work.
3. The banning of provocative religious or political emblems at the workplace.
4. All job openings should be publicly advertised and special recruitment efforts should be made to attract applicants from under-represented religious groups.
5. Lay-off, recall, and termination procedures should not in practice favor particular religious groupings.
6. The abolition of job reservations, apprenticeship restrictions and differential employment criteria, which discriminate on the basis of religious or ethnic origin.
7. The development of training programs that will prepare substantial numbers of current minority employees for skilled jobs, including the expansion of existing programs and the creation of new programs to train, upgrade, and improve the skills of minority employees.
8. The establishment of procedures to assess, identify, and actively recruit minority employees with the potential for further advancement.
9. The appointment of a senior management staff member to oversee the company's affirmative action efforts and the setting up of timetables to carry out affirmative action principles.

These Principles?

yes.

....or you can just simply avoid all business dealings with Northern Ireland, as my quote shows.

If I was a business in the USA, I would simply do my best to avoid ALL business with anyone in Northern Ireland.

Isn't it great how the United States government motivates folks to de facto boycott Northern Ireland?

next..we can discuss the embargo against Cuba, and why the US govt. hates Cubans.

;)

From being shown you were wrong on the pending legislation in the Knesset, to being shown you were wrong about American laws in regards to American companies boycotting Israel at the behest of foreign governments, to having no idea what the MacBride Principles are about you now want to move on to Cuba.

An emoticon will suffice for any further arguments.

Alternatively, your business could simply abide by principles which seek to end sectarianism in Northern Ireland.

What's wrong with that option?

fair question.

so, tell me, which is easier:

a) have no business operations in or with Northern Ireland

or

b) have business operations with or in Ulster and;

1. Increasing the representation of individuals from under-represented religious groups in the workforce including managerial, supervisory, administrative, clerical and technical jobs.
2. Adequate security for the protection of minority employees both at the workplace and while traveling to and from work.

;)....its ok...we all know which is the easier option.
