Why would you want to buy a home from someone that hated you?

err....cause I want his house. what do I care if he gets my money?

I get the house, that's my ultimate goal.

I'm sure I have bought lots of things from folks who hate Jews. That's not my problem. As long as I have the ability to live my own life, that's all I care about.

Sure, I'd prefer to buy a car, or a home, or a dog, or a hamburger, or a dvd from someone who is not a bigot. But if the most convenient place to buy the stuff from, or if the dealer who has the car that I want, or the person who is selling the house that I want happens to be a bigot, then so be it. I should have the right to make that choice.

So do you believe that he should be forced to sell it to you if you have the money?

Yes, it is illegal for someone to refuse to sell something to me, be it a house, a car, a hamburger, a cd, simply because I am a Jew.

And I support this law. Its a damn good law.

All citizens of a nation who pay taxes, should be able to engage in Commerce without fear of racial, ethnic, or religious discrimination.

Now, if you don't want to have black friends....good for you.

If you don't wan't to have Jews at your house party....good luck.

If you want to prevent Asians from entering your car.....congrats.

So sellers should have no rights when it comes to choosing who to sell to?

what business reason is there to not want to sell hamburgers to Vietnamese people?

is their money not as good as that of white-Christians?

what economic reason is there to refuse to rent to a Methodist?

Nice dodge, how about answering the question?

sellers should have the right to sell to whomever is willing to pay the most amount of money for their product.

should sellers have the right to not sell to someone due to their race, religion, ethnicity?

I can't think of one good reason why someone would not want to take the money of a Jew, black, Asian, Muslim, etc etc.

Until someone can give me a logical, rational, economically viable reason to NOT sell a product to someone of a certain ethnic, racial, or religious....they should not have such a right.

Sorry.

You still haven't answered the questions I asked. Should they have to sell to whomever offers the most? Do they have no rights to choose who to sell to?

This is an easy enough question Thunder, either you believe that they have to sell to whomever has the money, or you believe that sellers can in some cases say no. Which is it?

I do not believe that businesses should have the right to not sell something to someone simply due to their race, ethnicity, or religion. Or sex for that matter.

How much clearer can I get?

I'm with Thunder on this one. What good does it do a society to legalize discrimination?

Isn't it obvious?

it helps to keep your community clean, pure, and dirt free.

:o

now, how should we deal with the issue of the apartment complex in East Jerusalem?

Obama should call Netanyahu on the phone, mention the matter, and simply say:

"Bibi, honestly, help me help you".

Yes you said that, but that doesn't answer the question.

From what you say, Obama needs to sort out the US's problems first, after all according to you were it not for the law you'd all be segregated hate mongerers.

yes, I agree that the Mideast peace process has become a bit of a waste of time.

I think we should focus on more pressing matters, like Iraq and Afghanistan

Or focus on areas of conflict that have more possibility of success and progress.

Israel and Palestine has become...tiresome.

In a decent society you shouldn't need to legislate it, society itself will deal with those that stand out as discrimatory quicky and consisely. Banning it from appearing means that those that are discrimitory can hide it by using other methods to do the same thing making it harder for society to deal with.

Yeah cause sorting out the rest of the world's "problems" while ignoring those in your own backyard is such a great thing.

Gee I wonder if one of the major reasons the US has such a bad rep outside of the Northern part of the American continents is that it goes around telling everyone one else how they should be living their lives while not fixing up the serious issues it has in its own house?

one could easily argue that since Americans have been forced to live, work, and learn together since 1968, we have grown much more tolerant, inclusive, and open.

but we still have a long way to go before we can abandon all anti-discrimination laws and expect everything will be hunky-dorey.

One could suggest that this is because you are forcing people to live, work, and learn together rather than educating people to live, work, and learn together.

In NZ, Maori are so interbred with Europeans now that there is often no telling who is Maori and who isn't purely by sight. There are plenty of blond, blue eyed, Maori and quite a few deeply tanned Europeans. (We can still tell the Asians, but no way to tell by sight if they are 5th generation or 1st.) In the IT dept in my company we a number of Maori guys. One of them is about 6', has pale skin, and shaves his head. If you put him next to a skinhead, then except for the lack of tattooes you couldn't visually see a difference. There is simply little point to discriminating here by race as half the time you have no clue who to discriminate against.

Now I am not going to say that it doesn't mean it doesn't happen at all, I know there are idiots out there, I used to know a few, it was more fun arguing with them than with you, but as a whole, most people in NZ aren't biased against anyone other than Australians. We also tend to respect other people's beliefs and cultures. It'd be nice to see the US do likewise and get past the colour of people's skins, though I am sure you agree with that.

So back to the OP.

The major thing in Israel is that the law doesn't just permit Jewish owners to have Jewish only apartment buildings, but it also permits Arab owners having Arab only apartment buildings, and when we are dealing with two cultures that are very insular and tend not to get on with each other, forcing them to live together rather than using education to do it is like sticking a lit stick of dynamite under a house.

Forcing people that hate each other to live beside each other and then suppressing their hate works wonders though, I mean just look at the ex-country of Yugoslovia.

If instead it's out in the open, and being dealt with, education starts to win and in the end, hopefully intelligence starts to win out rather than waiting for the explosion that occurs when it's bottled up and hidden.

So it comes down to this. I don't like the idea of having "Jew only" of "arab only" apartments. I think that the Israeli society should stand up to those doing it and tell them to stop, but I also think they have a right to make themselves look moronic in front of everyone else. I also think that considering the two cultures, separation to a degree isn't a bad thing until they can actually learn to live together without killing each other, and I don't believe that forcing them to live together is the way to achieve that end, I believe that it can only come via education and through people both in the grass-roots and the leadership being willing to stop the cycle of hate.

oh, that's just lovely.

look Timmy, Arabs can discriminate too!!! isn't that great? now its allllll okee dokee.
