Merged Rep. Giffords Shot In Tucson

This thread has been illuminating.

It seems bizarre to me that these speculations are somehow considered off-limits, or non-skeptical. I haven't seen anyone saying they "believe" or are "convinced" or "know" that the shooter had any given motivations. I have seen people say things like: I "think", I "wonder", I "would be surprised", etc.

I am speculating (gasp) that this was a deeply troubled person acting out against authority in general. It had little to do with red/blue, etc.

It is very reasonable in my mind to explore the possibility that there is a link to the over-the-top violent language being tossed about by the TP crowd. It would be moronic not to make the connection. I just don't think that is the case here.

I fear that if this were a political assassination of the TP persuasion, there would have been a number of differences.
Notably:
1) Far less likely to have shot by standers.
2) We would already have the "goodbye letter" illustrating why the country was going to hell, Obama is a socialist, blah blah blah.

The little girl has apparently been identified as Christina Taylor Green of Tucson. It's reported that a neighbour invited her to the event, according to an uncle, Greg Segalini.

:( :( :(

Interesting this is in the Social events forum and not the Politics. Oh well... From the sounds of it this guy was really the paranoid CT'ist Ron Paul/David Icke lover....

Oh are you in for a treat. :boxedin:

But it is too long. If I start here it would be like reading the first and last lines of Tale of Two Cities
IIRC Approximately
It was the best of times , it was the worst of times
It is a far , far better thing than I have ever done

I know I haven't read past the first few posts in the thread but what does that have to do with anything?
Some other people also seem to be extremely upset by that question, but I don't think you should be. That was my second thought too. Certainly not because I would have been happier if it was a Republican, but as a politically interested person, the ramifications of a political assassination depends on who the victim is. I initially judged there was a 9:1 chance that it was a Democrat, then when I heard it was in Arizona I changed that to 3:1.. you may accuse me for being unusually analytic, but please do not assume this is because my empathy is not also fully functional.

Oh, geez. The little girl is now being reported to be one of the babies featured in the book "Faces of Hope" about babies born on 9/11/01. :( :( :(

this is disgusting.

this man needs to fry..and soon. i'd like to watch it happen.

and Sarah Palin needs to be sued in civil court for political incitement.

...and of course, Truthers and other nuts will use this detail as proof of an "inside-job".

It was in politics.
AFAIR, it was here, then in US Politics, and then back here again. It really makes more sense here, since while it relates to a US politician, it doesn't, as far as we know, relate to US politics.

It was in politics.
Didn't know that. Only made that comment after my post was moved from politics because it seemed to be the appropriate forum. No big deal.

Social Issues & Current Events
Interesting this is in the "Social Issues & Current Events forum" and not the Politics forum. ;)

Also don't read too deeply into the comment. I wasn't implying this wasn't an appropriate forum as much as I was implying Politics was equally appropriate (but can understand the move).

I dunno. He appears to be extremely, extremely mentally ill. Looks like genuine insanity to me.

He's crazy enough to where I really don't think we can blame Palin et al on this at all.

You are allowed to talk about whatever you want... and others are allowed to criticize you for your words.

It's called the First Amendment. A lawyer would know that

A competent one would, anyway.

I suppose it is quite a stretch to assume that all lawyers are competent, especially in light of the evidence that there may be one here in this very thread who is otherwise.
