if the Jews are not an ethnic group, how is it that we used to have our own country, named after us, called "Judaea"? And before that "Judah". And before that "Israel".

but as a practical matter, very few of us can actually trace our ancestors back to Palestine.

from what I read, only a few thousand Italian Jews actually know for sure that their ancestors actually came from Judea, as they are the direct descendants of slaves brought to Rome.

as for the rest of us, we could be direct descendants of the Hebrews, or descended from European converts in the 3rd century AD. who the hell knows.
