Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

Actually I wasn't refering to the morality, but rather the consistency of it.
The slave laws (like most of the stuff in the bible) appears in multiple contradictory versions.

I know. But I needed a segue. ;)

I've been meaning to throw this at DOC for a while, and it seemed like a golden opportunity. :D

You mean when he's on a two weeks vacation doing "research"? ;)
Can't wait for his next analyzation of the material.

But in the meantime, I'll use my psychic powers and guess that DOC will claim those things were done by followers and not god's will and jesus preeched about love something never unheard of before his time (like say... Leviticus 19?) and someone who said something good about love can't possibly say something evil about putting people to death for idiotic reasons (like say Leviticus 18 / 20? Only 1 page away...)

I do hope he's not off studying the Bible for his evidence. That would not be a useful way to spend his research time. His time would be better spent figuring out how you can get past the Laws of Thermodynamics and multiplying loaves and fishes.

God gives the different sexes different callings, but they are still equal before him. I don't complain that God does not allow me to give birth to a baby. And most denominations do allow woman to teach and speak in church.

That's not what Paul said. He says for women to be silent in church, and to cover their heads.

Maybe Paul wasn't telling the truth.

Multiplying fishes is easy. Get a mamma fish and a papa fish and let nature take its course. I guess that sourdough is a kind of multiplying loaf, after a fashion.

Which just means that Jesus worked at a San Fransico bakery/fishmonger during the missing 17 years.

I hope DOC is reading the Bible. It can be an illuminating experience, to read it cover-to-cover.

Apparently:
Evelyn Waugh said:
In the hope of keeping him quiet for a few hours Freddy & I have bet Randolph £20 that he cannot read the whole Bible in a fortnight. It would have been worth it at the price. Unhappily it has not had the result we hoped. He has never read any of it before and is hideously excited; keeps reading quotations aloud 'I say I bet you didn't know this came in the Bible "bring down my grey hairs in sorrow to the grave'" or merely slapping his side & chortling 'God, isn't God a [naughty word redacted]'

Well there is most likely "some" truth in all religions, but how many other religions do you know has enough evidence to fuel a thread like this one.

Pretty much all of them, provided the right person starts it...

Now, I ask you again, DOC, where is the HARD evidence that you have for how we know that the authors of the nt told the truth?
Well as I have said before the title of this thread was taken from Geisler's book Chapter 11 on the spur of the moment. He was probably referring to himself and his co-author. If I had to do it over I would title this thread "Evidence that the NT writers were telling the truth". And I believe some of that evidence can be found in post 13104. I will bring in some more evidence within 12 days or so, when I get the time to properly present it.

And in case you missed it, a definition for evidence was stated in post #13.

No, that's just the stuff that has already been comprehensively debunked.

re: OT death penalty other than apostacy.

Does the Koran or the Haddith require stoning disobedient children (Deuteronomy 21:18-21 ) or for working on the Sabbath (Numbers 15:32-36)? Were these supposedly done away with in the NT?

Here is some of what Wiki says on "Stoning:

"In AD 30, {right around the time of Jesus' ministry} forty years before the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, the Sanhedrin effectively abolished capital punishment. As God alone was deemed to be the only arbiter in the use of capital punishment, not fallible people, the Sanhedrin made stoning a hypothetical upper limit on the severity of punishment.
<snip>
Prior to early Christianity, particularly in the Mishnah, doubts were growing in Jewish society about the morality of capital punishment in general and stoning in particular. The laws make it clear that the death penalty was used only rarely.
<snip>
In the Sahih Bukhari, however, stoning is mandated by Mohammed at least 34 times.

And the OT talks of those laws, but the only actual stonings that come to mind is that of the martyr Stephen who was one of the first deacons of the new church.

Much of the Jews whole identity of that era was their religion. Just as much of our identity is to be a citizen of our country. The US has the death penalty for treason, but few actually receive it. When you think about it, rebelling against the one and only God who created you and the universe (whom they of that era certainly believe existed) should be a more serious offense then rebelling against your country.

This tread is really strange.
My experience with real theologists is that they claim that faith is a question of faith, not evidence.
Perhaps DOC will return having read the bible and accept that his faith is just that. :)

ETA: or maybe not. :(

There is a difference between faith and blind faith. Yes, you do need faith to believe in Christianity just like you need faith to believe 10 billion trillion stars came from something smaller than an atom.

Also 1 Peter 3:15 (NLT) says this:

"Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it."

Did this make it into your holy book, or do judicial decisions overrule the word of God?
