Are you a Shire Boy Akhenaten? I grew up in Miranda.

Gymea here. I was a founding member of the 1st East Miranda (Scottish) Scout Troop and my Dad was the Scoutmaster. Until our new hall was built on the corner of Karimbla and Kiora Roads we had our meetings in the underground car park at Miranda Fair. That was in the mid to late sixties, and MF was a lot smaller than the megashopolis it's become.

I went to Gymea Bay Primary and was a member of the very first classes at Kirrawee High in 1966.

I kissed my first girlfriend in the little park outside that scout hall. Went to Port Hacking High and got my first job at Grace Bros in Miranda Fair.

I moved away from the Shire as soon as I could.... all the way to Rockdale.

Ahhhh! That's lovely! Many thanks for those nice comments - I love the warmth and friendliness of Australians. I'm still not quite sure what time it is, but I know it is Monday morning now (I can tell by listening to the radio!) and, coming to this thread to say how lovely it was to talk to both lionking and Orphia_Nay, I have started the week with a smile because of reading the above and watching the you tube!

My friends wrote a diary for me which I'll read through ad summarise later, and then I'll post it here.

The London>Singapore and Singapore>London legs of the flight were in a cabin like this: http://britishairwayphoto.blogspot.com/2010/07/british-airways-business-class-seats.html and I was able to sleep properly. The Qantas planes from Singapore>Brisbane and Adelaide>Singapore were of a more conventional design but being able to stretch out comfortably was worth paying for ... and as I said earlier (I think) I had a very good bargain on price. I was well cared for and assisted at all airports most efficiently.

ETA I've just tried the link, but it didn't download properly - the line at the bottom of the page moved along a bit, then stopped, so I'll try and find a better one later today.

My Adelaide friends will be visiting here next year, after a cycle ride along the Danube, taking in Vienna along the way, but I think I'll have to start putting aside the funds for my next trip! TAM Australia 2013 maybe?!

Cheers, Susan! I hope I get to see you next time.

Your link seems to work fine now, so it must only have been a temporary problem. Looks very comfy!

Looking forward to your diary immensely. I hope there's pictures.

:)

Hugs, Susan!

I'm so sick of cattle class travel to Europe, and that's only after two trips. I really don't want to go there unless I can afford business class. But I don't think I've got more than a few hundred frequent flyer points, dammit!

Looking forward to hearing more about your trip.

It sounds like drugs and alcohol have claimed another.

The line, "I am the voice, left from drinking", always resonated with me.

Vale Colin (James)

Yeah I heard about that. Didn't he write a book about his battle with alcohol?

Was there a cooler looking front man for a band in the 80s?

Yes I read his autobiography. He did an enormous amount of drinking. I wondered why he wasn't at the Arias the other night with the rest of Models.

I think the band went down hill when he joined, but still a bit sad. I remember him for something else tho':

Tacky, very tacky.

The best was the early work but I am listening to Pleasure of Your Company at the moment and its not too shabby at all. The Out of Mind Out of Sight album is a solid listen too, though dated.

Tacky describes a lot of Countdown appearances.

I heard recently that they were going to do a few reunion shows with The Reels.

Yes they are!

Performing all of Local &/or General and The Reels doing all of Quasimodo's Dream.

Might have to see if I can get tickets.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Freud

James died one week after the Models, without him, were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. The absence was explained publicly as being necessary due to James' commitments to managing his sons' band. Privately the organizers were told that James would not attend because he could not be anywhere near alcohol. During the ceremony, James Freud's former bandmate Sean Kelly explained Freud's absence by saying he had "fallen off the bike".

A statement from the office of Michael Gudinski, whose Mushroom Records launched Freud's solo career and that of Models, said the musician had taken his own life. The statement read: "James' battle with alcoholism has been well chronicled. His two books on his recovery and five years' sobriety were bestsellers and gave a lot of people who were suffering the same affliction comfort and hope. Unfortunately, James has succumbed to his disease and taken his own life this morning.''

:( :( :(

Now he's out of sight, but not out of my mind.

I now have a few pictures on the computer, but don't know how to post them. Can anyone tell me - very simply" - how?

My time in Adelaide (before and after going to Port Lincoln) was spent very much enjoying the company of my friends there and their extended families. K, K and T all came to visit with their young children; Went to tanunda for coffee and chat with TH, and L; went with L to Balaclava, Claire, Gladstone and Port Pirie and with M and A to Port Vincent; busy catching up with all the family news - lovely! We went to the Central Market - what an amazing place!

During my nearly three days in Brisbane I was taken to Mount Coot-tha view point; took a City Cat up to UQ then back the other way, seeing avenue of jacarandas and having lunch in the park; joined in an exercise class; lunched at the University; and enjoyed the company of my friends.

In Port Lincoln, I spent the time with the friend I'd lived two doors away from in 1986. We walked along the foreshore - and I heard all about how a bulk carrier had recently sunk a very expensive tuna fishing boat.

On the way back to the airport, my friend was flagged down by local police, who were, it seems, doing random breath checks! We were very amused that she - nearly 80 - had to be breathalysed!!
