o'donnel: i dabbled in withcraft

I'm a christian. Two of my best friends are wiccans.

I fail to see what exactly is supposed to be wrong here.

1. The hope is that revealing her witchcrafty past will depress turnout among Christian conservatives. That's Maher's rationale for releasing the tape.

2. It tends to reinforce her image (fair or not, true or not) as a little bit wacky. In politics image is very important, and anything that plays to a perceived stereotype, like the Bush DUI played to his perceived stereotype as a "frat boy", can be highly damaging.

Either way, fundies lap these I-was-sinner-until-I-found-JEEZus tales up like a alcoholic does spilt beer off a saloon floor. It won't turn off anyone who wasn't going to vote for her in the first place.

True enough, but it'll give the undecided, middle-of-the-road voters something to consider before they cast a vote for this nutball.

I won't go so far as to say dabbling in witchcraft is necessarily insane. It would only be insane if they had a decent education including basic knowledge of the immutable laws of nature.

The fact that O'donnel used "I was in high school!" as an excuse for the massively ignorant dabbling serves more as a sad indictment of our failing educational system. Only in bizzaro-world would I expect people who have been in classrooms for over a decade to remain that ignorant.

Well, it's for the same reason you are going to look somewhat suspiciously on someone who actually believes what Joseph Smith or L Ron Hubbard had to say.

You prefer your politicians to be rational don't you?

I don't even consider 'dabbling in witchcraft' as completely irrational or contrary to education for a woman of her age (at the time she claims to have dabbled).

Many of my female friends at that time similarly dabbled because they were young women coming into independence and finding a lot of sexism in the world around them. The emphasis of a feminine diety in modern wicca serves as a stark contrast to that and has a strong appeal to young, intelligent, strong-willed women.

There is nothing wrong with dabbling in witchcraft in one's youth. I would like to see the witch she dabbled though. :D

So you support Republican Sharon Angle over Democrat Harry Reid, then?

It's possible to be both religious and rational.

joobie, if you are going to put up a title to entice us to comment, may I ask you to take sufficient care in crafting it that you don't make errors like this?

Or is withcraft a brand of motor boat sold only in Delaware?
Yeah, but she claims she saw a satanic altar with REAL blood on it!
Also known as her first saturated tampon, left on a dresser.
What about her pastor?
I'd be happy to look passed her, as this is all happening in ****** Delaware, not somewhere important.
Like many who turn to politics, O'donnell is a control freak. First, she wanted to control everyone through witchcraft. Unable to make that work, she turned to religious indoctrination in a brazen attempt to eliminate masturbation, hoping to deprive the ugly and unpopular people of any fun at all. Once again frustrated, she turned to politics. And now, having won a primary, she and her control urges have become slightly troublesome. The evil giggle that bubbled up out of her after the primary result became final was precious, but I don't want to hear it again.
Toss a bucket of water on her, but don't tell anyone I suggested it, I have no need for the Secret Service to come pestering me in re a political assassination.
The thing is, would anyone have known about this if she hadn't brought it up herself?
Probably not, which is why she brought it up: to get the attention of skeptics. :p

i tried to change it. you can't. i didn't find it important enough to ask a moderator to change it.

This line of attacks seems pretty inconsequential to me. Just too old and not important to any issue.

I'd imagine Christian conservatives will rationalize their support for her saying she was young and changed her ways. Sounds good to me, I just wish they were that understanding of their political opponents as well.

I guess I see a difference between dabbling in witchcraft in highschool and more-than-dabbling in communism and socialism in college ... and afterwords. :D
